Caylee Anthony and More…A Look Back at 2008

First before I go any further in recapping 2008, I want to say thank you to the more than 270,000 people who have taken the time to stop by, read and leave a comment on my site. When I started this blog back in August, I never thought that I would reach 1,000 readers, much less nearly 300,000! It absolutely blows my mind!!!

As most of you already know, I only blog for fun during the spare time I have before work, after work and after the kids have gone to bed at night. I’m not a professional. I don’t break the news, I just pass along stories that I find of interest and hope to spark discussion amongst those who stop by the site. I did get interviewed by MSNBC for an article that came out this week. That was pretty cool, possibly the highlight of my year!

Judging by the number of people who have visited the site, it seems that a lot of you have many of the same interests that I have, and I appreciate you taking the time to read! 🙂 I have enjoyed reading each and every comment that has been left and every email that has been sent to me @ roaddawg33@aol.com. I would  have to say that the  most read stories I have posted this year have been about Casey and Caylee Anthony. This has been a truly sad story from the beginning. The loss of a little girl who none of us knew until July who it seems was taken by her own mother. (Yes, I believe that she did it and more than likely her family knew about it at some point in time).

I have said this before, and I’ll say it again: I wish that I never had to cover this story. I wish that Caylee Anthony was still alive, with a loving family, celebrating the holidays. I wish that she had the opportunity to grow up, go to school, get married and start a family of her own. Having a 3 and 1 year old is the greatest experience I’ve had in my life. I can’t understand how anyone would ever harm their own child. It makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE TO ME!

Unfortunately, not all people live with the same morals and values in this life. This has been a tragedy and I hope that closure will come with the trial in 2009 and those who were a part of the death of a sweet, innocent young child, will face the consequences that they deserve.

When I started the blog in August, I thought that I would only be covering politics, music and sports. I went to my fair share of concerts including: Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn, Gary Allan, LeeAnn Rhimes, Phil Vassar, Lonestar and Luke Bryan. All were great shows and I can’t wait for another lineup of great acts to come through the Bay Area in 2009. Thanks to KRTY for all the great shows at the Rodeo Club! Bring back Phil Vassar!!!! Best show of ’08.

The Olympics took up quite a bit of my time this summer, watching Michael Phelps run for 8 gold medals in Beijing. Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh also dominated Women’s Volleyball again this year (and Misty got her butt slapped by the President) and who can forget the US Dream Team taking home the gold!

The 2008 Presidential race was one for the ages! In the end, Barack Obama defeated his Republican counterpart John McCain in what could be considered a convincing fashion. Saturday Night Live made Tina Fey famous once again for her impressions of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (who’s daughter gave birth to a baby boy this week).

There’s been a lot more this year that I just don’t have time to mention: TechCrunch Vs. PR, The Economy and much, much more. I’ll be heading off to the Seattle/Tacoma Airport tomorrow afternoon (if you can find me, stop by and say hi…Southwest Airlines) to fly back to San Jose after a week in the snowy Pacific Northwest, but not before making a quick trip South to visit client Burgerville for a Pepper Bacon Cheeseburger, French Fries and my favorite: a Vanilla Shake! Centralia…here I come!

Tina Fey Advised to Keep the Sarah Palin Outfit

Getting a little cocky, are we now. Sarah Palin had some advice for Tina Fey at a rally in Columbus, Ohio, Sunday night: Get ready for four more years in the role. We’ll finally have the opportunity to see who is declared the winner tomorrow…or Wednesday…or Thursday. So, who do you think is going to win the “most important election of all time”? Barack Obama or John McCain.

From the Los Angeles Times:

The writer and actress has done an impression of the Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate in “Saturday Night Live” skits over the last two months to great acclaim.

“Did anyone catch John McCain last night on ‘SNL’? . . . He was just a pro in those skits there with Tina Fey,” she said as the crowd roared.

“And a little advice for Tina. We wanted to make sure she’s holding on to that Sarah outfit, because she’s going to need it for the next four years.”

John McCain Appears on Saturday Night Live…So, How’d He Do?

Republican John McCain poked fun at his presidential campaign’s financial shortcomings and his reputation as a political maverick in an appearance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” earlier this evening. So, how did he do?

From the Associated Press:

The presidential hopeful made a cameo appearance at the beginning of the show, with Tina Fey reprising her memorable impersonation of McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

McCain, who is trailing Democrat Barack Obama in most battleground state polls, also appeared during the show’s “Weekend Update” newscast to announce he would pursue a new campaign strategy in the closing days of the campaign.

“I thought I might try a strategy called the reverse maverick. That’s where I’d do whatever anybody tells me,” McCain said.

And if that didn’t work, “I’d go to the double maverick. I’d just go totally berserk and freak everybody out,” the Arizona senator quipped.

Earlier in the show, McCain and Fey, portraying Palin, said they couldn’t afford a half-hour campaign commercial on network television like Democrat Barack Obama aired earlier this week. They said they’d sell campaign products on the QVC shopping channel instead.

Among other things, McCain advertised a set of knives to cut through pork in Washington. His wife, Cindy McCain, briefly appeared to advertise “McCain Fine-Gold” jewelry, a play on the campaign finance law McCain authored with Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold.

The Arizona senator appeared in the opening skit, next to former cast member Tina Fey reprising her role as his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

“This past Wednesday, Barack Obama purchased airtime on three major networks,” he said in the first skit. “We, however, can only afford QVC (the television home shopping network).”

Later, McCain — who delivered his lines with a smile on his face — took another shot at his own expense.

“Look, would I rather be on three major networks? Of course,” he said. “But I’m a true maverick — a Republican without money.”

Throughout the skit, McCain and Fey hawked campaign memorabilia such as a set of knives that cuts through pork, and a jewelry collection that McCain’s wife, Cindy, held up.

He dubbed the latter “McCain Fine Gold,” a play on the name of the campaign reform act that he sponsored with Russ Feingold, a Democratic senator from Wisconsin.

McCain also took humorous potshots at his Democratic rival, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, and his vice-presidential pick, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden.

McCain pointed to a set of 10 commemorative plates that he said celebrates the 10 town hall meetings he would have had with Obama.

Ladies and gentlemen, tonight, Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin takes the stage with an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

After spending the better part of her candidacy under the safe confines of carefully staged rallies and having struggled through a few high-profile interviews, Sarah Palin is coming out of her media shell.

She now holds daily interviews with local broadcasters and conservative talk radio hosts, she gave her first ever on-camera press conference with her traveling press corps on Friday, and tonight she’ll take the leap that everyone’s been waiting for when she appears on “Saturday Night Live.”

“Oh, man. I’m excited for tomorrow night,” Palin told reporters on Friday. “I have no idea what to expect because I haven’t seen any scripts or anything else yet, but it will be fun. The opportunity to show American television watchers anyway that you get to have a sense of humor through all of this or even just this really would be wearin’, tearin’ on you, so an opportunity to show that sense of humor and that side of all of this, I look forward to it.”

On the NBC show, Tina Fey has been relentless in portraying Palin as an unqualified joke over the last few weeks, and Fey’s satirical take on the Alaska governor has left its mark on the public consciousness. For that very reason, it would seem that Palin has much to gain and little to lose in tonight’s appearance.

If Palin can show an ability to laugh at herself, and perhaps even more importantly, succeeds in giving Fey a taste of her own comic medicine, she will reap the benefit of days of positive coverage on cable news and entertainment media outlets. “Saturday Night Live” may be a comedy show, but Palin’s appearance could very well have a serious impact on the election.

Joe Biden’s Reaction To SNL Portrayal of Recent Debate with Sarah Palin

I guess Joe Biden enjoys Saturday Night Live. As you will see in the video below, Biden just can’t stop laughing.

Appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Wednesday, Biden laughed, and laughed, and laughed — and laughed some more — when host Diane Sawyer played a clip of last weekend’s gut-busting vice presidential debate skit. Biden was laughing so hard after watching the clip of actor Jason Sudeikis lampooning Biden’s admitted soft spot for GOP presidential nominee John McCain  that he was rendered something he rarely, if ever, is: speechless.

Between uncontrollable chuckles, Biden told Sawyer, “Oh God. I wish I had that much hair.” Still unable to stop laughing, Biden said, “These guys are incredible, I don’t know what to say.”

Sawyer, who got the giggles over watching Biden’s laugh attack, asked if that was the first time Biden had seen the SNL video. “I have watched it,” Biden said, laughing, “but every time…” he trailed off, trying, without success, to contain himself.

When the ABC interview ends, the camera stays on Biden, who sits there still laughing to himself. Looking down, he shakes his head and utters, “Oh God.”
