Ted Stevens Believed to Be on Crashed Plane

August 10, 2010

Early this morning, a plane believed to be carrying eight people, including former Senator Ted Stevens, crashed in southwest Alaska. There is no word on any casualties at this time.

From the Associated Press:

Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said there were possible fatalities. Five good Samaritans were on scene early Tuesday helping the crash victims, he said. It was unclear how they reached the site.

A U.S. government official told The Associated Press that Alaska authorities have been told the former longtime Republican senator is among several passengers on the plane. The official, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, says Stevens’ condition is unknown.

The federal official declined to be publicly identified because the crash response and investigation are under way.

President Obama to Sign Abortion Limits Order

March 24, 2010

President Obama plans to sign an executive order today that will ensure that existing limits on the federal funding of abortion remain in place under the new health care overhaul law.

From CNN:

Unlike the signing of the health care bill into law Tuesday, which was conducted under the glare of media cameras, the event Wednesday will be closed to the news media.

It will be attended by Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan and 12 of his anti-abortion Democratic House colleagues, without whose help the landmark overhaul bill would not have passed, political observers say.

The White House said the executive order reaffirms longstanding restrictions on the federal funding of abortion in the new law.

Dick Cheney Hospitalized

February 22, 2010

Former Vice President Dick Cheney has been hospitalized with chest pains, this according to CNN.

First Bill Clinton, now Cheney. Not a good time to be a politician with a bad heart!

From CNN:

His doctors are evaluating the situation, and Cheney, 69, is resting comfortably at George Washington University Hospital, the staff said in a statement.

From WPTV:

Cheney was admitted Monday afternoon after experiencing chest paints. Two doctors say tonight that Cheney is stable, but may have additional treatment tomorrow. Cheney had an angiogram to allow doctors to look in his coronary arteries. What they saw raises the possibility of additional treatment.

Dick Cheney has had four heart attacks–the first when he was just 37.

Couple Crashes White House State Dinner

November 25, 2009

Talk about a security lapse!

A couple from Northern Virginia appear to have crashed the White House’s state dinner last night, penetrating layers of security with no invitation.

While the White House hasn’t provided an explanation, it is believed that this is the first time in recent history that anyone has crashed a White House state dinner.

Where are “Wedding Crashers” Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn when you need them! I’m sure they could give some tips on how this happened!

From the Washington Post:

Tareq and Michaele Salahi — polo-playing socialites known for a bitter family feud over a Fauquier County winery and their possible roles in the forthcoming “The Real Housewives of Washington” — were seen arriving at the White House and later posted on Facebook what appeared to be photos of themselves with VIPs at the elite gathering.

“Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!” one of them wrote on their joint Facebook page at 9:08 p.m.

But a White House official said the couple was not invited to the dinner, not included on the official guest list, and were never seated at a table in the South Lawn tent.

A woman describing herself as a publicist for the Salahis denied that they were interlopers. Pressed for details, Mahogany Jones sent a statement saying simply: “The Salahis were honored to be a part of such a prestigious event ….. They both had a wonderful time.”

How could it happen? A former White House senior staffer — who more than a decade ago encountered a crasher at one of the executive mansion’s less-fancy parties — offered this theory:

A savvy pair of crashers, dressed to the nines, might arrive on foot at the Visitor’s Entrance, announce their names — then express shock and concern when the security detail at the gate failed to find them on the guest list. On a rainy night like Tuesday, with a crowd of 300-plus arriving, security might have lost track of or granted a modicum of sympathy to a pair that certainly looked like they belonged there. If their IDs didn’t send up any red flags in the screening process, they would be sent through the magnetometers and into the White House.

Bristol Palin Says Abstinence Is Best

May 6, 2009

Uh huh….very interesting indeed!

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol Palin, who caused a stir on her mother’s U.S. vice presidential campaign last year when it was revealed she was pregnant, has urged young Americans to abstain from having sex to avoid becoming a teenage mother like herself.

From Reuters:

Some girls believe a baby “is like having an accessory on their hip,” Bristol Palin, 18, told a panel. “Having a baby is a huge responsibility and I think that teenagers should just wait to have sex,” she said.

Palin was speaking at an event organized by The Candie’s Foundation, which aims to educate teenagers about the problems young people face if they get pregnant, and which has appointed her as a teen ambassador.

Palin’s pregnancy hit the headlines when her mother — known for her staunch conservatism on social issues — ran as the Republican vice presidential candidate alongside John McCain in the White House race won by Democrat Barack Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden.

Bristol Palin had a son, Tripp, in December and has since split with her fiance and the baby’s father, Levi Johnston.

Senator Kennedy Collapses During Inauguration Lunch

January 20, 2009

Senator Ted Kennedy was removed from President Obama’s celebratory inaugural luncheon earlier today after he suffered what has been reported to be a seizure.

From the New York Times:

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who is ill with brain cancer, collapsed at the Inauguration Day luncheon honoring President Obama, casting a pall over what had been a glorious celebration.

Details of Mr. Kennedy’s condition were not known immediately, except that he was stricken and taken by an emergency medical crew to a Washington hospital.

Shortly before 3 p.m., CNN reported that Mr. Kennedy, 76, had suffered a seizure and been taken from Statuary Hall in the Capitol in a wheelchair. The senator’s brain tumor was discovered last spring after he suffered a seizure.

President Obama spoke briefly of Mr. Kennedy’s latest health problem. “Right now, part of me is with him,” the new president told the luncheon gathering. “This is a joyous time, but also a sobering time. Our prayers are with him and his wife, Vicki.”

CNN reported that Mr. Kennedy suffered a seizure just after medical attention was sought for Senator Robert C. Byrd, Democrat of West Virginia, who is 91 and has been noticeably frail in recent months. Mr.Byrd’s office subsequently said that he was fine..

The announcement that Mr. Kennedy had been taken to a hospital threw a cloud of gloom, at least for the moment, over the traditional inaugural day celebratory luncheon. Mr. Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat who is second in seniority only to Mr. Byrd, was stricken 48 years to the day after his brother President John F. Kennedy was inaugurated.

From Fox News:

A Republican House leadership member said Kennedy suffered a series of convulsions that lasted a while. He was taken out on a wheelchair and had to have his legs lifted up to get him out of the room. He was loaded onto an ambulance and removed.

Byrd, 91, and in failing health, was reportedly “emotional” at the time of his collapse and security detail decided to remove him from the room as a precautionary measure. His office said he is fine now and a former senior staffer chalked it up to his deciding to leave the lunch early.

Byrd and Kennedy were at the same table — along with Vice President Biden and second lady Jill Biden. The dual incidents occurred during the lunch portion of the program and did not interrupt the speeches.

Sen. John Kerry and wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, helped Kennedy get into the reclining chair in which he was wheeled out.
