DC Sniper Faces Execution Tonight

November 10, 2009

Virginia’s governor has refused to spare the life of convicted DC sniper John Allen Muhammad and has cleared the way for his execution tonight for the attacks in 2002 that left 10 dead.

Attorney J. Wyndal Gordon said Muhammad has no regrets and expects to die with dignity.

From the Associated Press:

The three-week killing spree in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., was carried out with a teenage accomplice who is serving life in prison without parole. Muhammad, 48, was to die by injection at 9 p.m. after he exhausted his court appeals and Gov. Tim Kaine denied clemency.

Muhammad’s attorneys had asked Kaine to commute his sentence to life in prison because they said he was severely mentally ill.

“I think crimes that are this horrible, you just can’t understand them, you can’t explain them,” said Kaine, a Democrat known for carefully considering death penalty cases. “They completely dwarf your ability to look into the life of a person who would do something like this and understand why.”

Muhammad was sentenced to death for killing Dean Harold Meyers at a gas station in northern Virginia. He and his accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, also were suspected of fatal shootings in Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana and Washington state.

Prosecutors chose to put Muhammad and Malvo on trial in Virginia first because of the state’s willingness to execute killers. He and Malvo were also convicted of six other murders in Maryland and both were sentenced to six life terms.

The death penalty was later ruled out for Malvo because the U.S. Supreme Court barred the execution of juveniles, who was 17 during the killing spree.

Jon Stewart Takes on Karl Rove and Bill O’Reilly

September 5, 2008

You have to love Jon Stewart (and Stephen Colbert for that matter), whether you are a Democrat or a Republican. The man has an incredible talent for taking some of the most important (and sometimes not so important) issues around the world, and brings them down to a level that everyone can understand. And he does it using comedy. On Wednesday nights episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart took on Karl Rove and Bill O’Reilly with evidence of their hypocrisy regarding Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

From the Huffington Post:

While Rove recently praised Palin’s experience as the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Stewart showed video of Rove trashing Virginia Governor — and former Richmond Mayor — Tim Kaine’s executive experience, listing all the cities that are bigger than Richmond and calling such a pick “political.”

Then, after recent video of O’Reilly describing Bristol Palin’s pregnancy as a family issue, Stewart showed a clip of the Fox News host blaming Jamie Lynn Spears’ parents for her teenage pregnancy.

Finally, after showing video of Dick Morris complaining about the rampant sexism in the media coverage of Sarah Palin, Stewart unveiled a clip of Morris saying that Hillary hides behind the sexism defense, and that anytime “the big boys” pick on Hillary, “she retreats behind the apron strings.”

“In Dick Morris’ defense,” Stewart said, “he is a lying sack of sh*t.”

Barack Obama Set to Pick Running Mate

August 22, 2008

The time is finally upon us. Barack Obama stated yesterday that he has chosen his running mate for the 2008 Presidential election. Unfortunately, he is not telling the public just yet.

From Reuters:

Obama has dragged out the announcement of a No. 2 for maximum political impact, but is running out of time. The Democratic nominating convention opens on Monday, with the vice president accepting the nomination on Wednesday.

Obama, 47, a first-term Illinois senator, said he had searched for a running mate who will be prepared to step in as president and one who could help him govern.

Obama’s announcement could come at any time, and he is expected to appear with his choice on Saturday in his home state of Illinois as they launch their run to the convention in Denver.

History has shown the choice of a running mate is unlikely to have a major impact on the November 4 White House election between Obama and Republican John McCain, but along with the upcoming conventions the choices give both candidates a chance for the political spotlight.

Speculation about Obama’s choice has centered on three prime contenders — Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden.

I believe that this is one of the most important elections of our lifetime and the buzz is intense right now waiting to hear who both Barack Obama and John McCain will choose as their VP running mates. There are many rumors out there of who their choices will be but there is not one definite choice on either side. I expect Obama to make his choice today with McCain’s decision coming in a few days. Time will tell. Thoughts?
