Monogamy Isn’t Human Nature…Is It?

July 29, 2010

An interesting piece on CNN today which discusses whether or not monogamy is good or bad for us.

Click the link below for the full story. So…what do you think?

From CNN:

In recent decades, the debate over human sexual evolution has entertained only two options: Humans evolved to be either monogamists or polygamists. This tired debate generally devolves into an antagonistic stalemate where women are said to have evolved to seek male-provisioned domesticity while every man secretly yearns for his own harem. The battle between the sexes, we’re told, is bred into our blood and bones.

Couples who turn to a therapist for guidance through the inevitable minefields of marriage are likely to receive the confusing message that long-term pair bonding comes naturally to our species, but marriage is still a lot of work.

Few mainstream therapists would contemplate trying to persuade a gay man or lesbian to “grow up, get real, and stop being gay.” But most insist that long-term sexual monogamy is “normal,” while the curiosity and novelty-seeking inherent in human sexuality are signs of pathology. Thus, couples are led to believe that waning sexual passion in enduring marriages or sexual interest in anyone but their partner portend a failed relationship, when in reality these things often signify nothing more than that we are Homo sapiens.

Golden Gate Bridge to Get Suicide Net

July 29, 2010

San Francisco’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission has approved $5 million for the design of a suicide barrier for the Golden Gate Bridge.

It is believed that more than 1,300 people have committed suicide by climbing over the four-foot-high railing on the bridge and jumped more than 200 feet to the bay below.

From the New York Times:

For 73 years, people have poured onto the picturesque red-colored span of the Golden Gate Bridge to take pictures, ride bicycles, commute and, in close to two dozen cases each year, to jump to their deaths, an act transportation officials moved to stop Wednesday by authorizing money for a suicide barrier.

“Having a deterrent on a structure like the Golden Gate Bridge, that has a singular attraction to people who want to jump, is crucial,” said John Brooks, whose 17-year-old daughter Casey leapt to her death in January 2008. “Just by giving someone a few seconds to rethink things makes the odds better that they won’t go through with it.”

Nine Indicted in Alleged Bullying Death

March 30, 2010

Nine teenagers  in Massachusetts have been charged surrounding their involvement in a campaign of bullying that lasted for months and led to the suicide in January of a 15-year-old girl.

From CNN:

Phoebe Prince’s body was found hanging in the stairway leading to her family’s second-floor apartment in South Hadley, Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth D. Scheibel told reporters in the western Massachusetts town of Northampton.

“It appears that Phoebe’s death on January 14 followed a torturous day for her when she was subjected to verbal harassment and physical abuse,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Prince had been harassed as she studied in the library at South Hadley High School, apparently in the presence of a faculty member and several students, none of whom reported it until after the death, Scheibel said.

Judge Rules Nancy Grace Can Be Videotaped

January 28, 2010

A judge has ruled that Headline News host Nancy Grace can be videotaped while answering questions surrounding a lawsuit accusing the her of pushing a single mom to commit suicide.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

But lawyers representing the estate of Melinda Duckett must not share the recording with “any third party” or disclose any portion of the testimony in the court file without the magistrate’s permission.

The order could keep Grace’s testimony a secret among the lawyers until the case goes to trial.

Magistrate Gary R. Jones outlined the conditions in a five-page ruling after lawyers for Grace asked Monday to bar cameras from the depositions she is scheduled to give Thursday in Atlanta.

Keeping video cameras out, Grace’s lawyers argued, would avoid “annoyance, embarrassment, oppression, and undue harm should the videotape be released prior to trial for purposes unrelated to the litigation,” according to the emergency motion filed in U.S. District Court in Ocala.
