Howard Stern Signs New Deal With Sirius Satellite Radio

December 9, 2010

Howard Stern announced on his show this morning that he has renewed his contract with the company. You know what that means: five more years of “The King of All Media” on Sirius Satellite Radio!

From the Los Angeles Times:

Ending speculation that he was going to take his show to the next frontier — whatever that might be — radio personality Howard Stern said on his morning show Thursday that he had signed a new deal that will keep him with satellite radio broadcaster Sirius XM for five more years.

Stern joined Sirius XM in 2006 in a five-year deal valued at $100 million annually.

From Ad Week:

As part of the new deal, Sirius XM will have the right to transmit Stern’s program to mobile devices. The satellite radio company did not provide any other details of the contract, which runs through Dec. 31, 2015.

“Howard is a great talent, and we are thrilled that he will continue to provoke, engage and entertain on Sirius XM. Our agreement is good news on all fronts—it is good for Sirius XM subscribers and good for Sirius XM stockholders. Howard forever changed radio and was instrumental in putting Sirius on the map, when he first launched on satellite radio. He is one of the few ‘one-name’ entertainers in the country, and our 20 million subscribers are lucky to have him,” said Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius XM.

Artie Lange Attempts Suicide

January 7, 2010

Artie Lange, most well known for his role on the Howard Stern Show, found himself in the hospital this weekend after reportedly stabbing himself nine times.

Best wishes to Lange and to his family!

From CBS News:

Lange’s publicist confirmed that the radio host was hospitalized. The Post says surgeons were able to save him despite heavy bleeding.

Lange’s mother called police Saturday morning after entering his Hoboken, N.J. apartment and found the bloodied comedian, a law-enforcement source told the New York paper. “Lange sustained six ‘hesitation wounds’ and three deep plunges,” the paper wrote.

The 42-year-old Lange has been absent from Stern’s Sirius radio show for a month. On Monday’s show, Stern said Lange isn’t leaving the program and called him “a tremendous contributor.”

Sirius Prepares For Bankruptcy

February 10, 2009

Sirius XM Radio Inc. has hired advisers to prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing, which could come in days, according to a news report.

From the Associated Press:

The New York Times said late Tuesday documents and analysis of a potential Chapter 11 filing are nearly complete, say people close to the company.

Sirius, whose radio personalities include shock jock Howard Stern, has struggled to refinance its debt load at a time when banks are skittish about lending. About $1 billion worth of debt comes due in 2009.

A bankruptcy could complicate matters for Charlie Ergen, chief executive of Dish Network Corp., who recently bought a major portion of a $300 million batch in Sirius debt that matures next Tuesday, the paper said.

Since then, speculation has arisen about whether Ergen would make a bid to buy Sirius. The possibility of a bankruptcy filing could force his hand to make an offer now in order to avoid the auction process in court. It also could put pressure on him to convert his debt into equity in the company at a higher price than he initially considered, the paper said.

Sirius has hired Alvarez & Marsal; Simpson, Thatcher & Bartlett; and Evercore Partners.

Sirius declined to comment on the report, as did Alvarez & Marsal and Evercore Partners. Simpson, Thatcher & Bartlett didn’t immediately return a call for comment.
