Al Qaeda Chief Beheaded Daniel Pearl

January 20, 2011

According to new reports, a senior al Qaeda leader, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, personally beheaded Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl back in 2002.

From CNN:

“I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan,” Mohammed said, according to a Pentagon transcript released nearly four years ago. “For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the Internet holding his head.”

The new report erases any doubts that Mohammed personally carried out the beheading.

Richard Holbrooke Dies

December 13, 2010

Richard Holbrooke, a U.S. diplomat who wrote part of the Pentagon Papers and served as President Barack Obama’s special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan, died today at the age of 69.

From CNN:

The 69-year-old diplomat died Monday at George Washington University Hospital. He was admitted last Friday after feeling ill. Doctors performed surgery Saturday to repair a tear in his aorta.

One of the world’s most recognizable diplomats, Holbrooke’s career spanned from the Vietnam War-era to the war against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, coinciding with presidencies of the past five decades, from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama.

He also worked as a journalist and an investment banker. But as a diplomat, he was plain-speaking, accessible, and known for his tough-mindedness.

“He was known as a bit of bull in a China shop,” said Nic Robertson, CNN’s senior international correspondent who knew and covered Holbrooke.

Bullets Hit Pentagon, No Injuries Reported

October 19, 2010

A gunman fired shots at the Pentagon early this morning, but it appears that no one has been injured.

News broadcasts are reporting that this the first incident like this since a gunman shot and wounded two security officers near the Pentagon entrance earlier this year.

From CNN:

Pentagon police spokesman Chris Layman said it’s not known who fired the shots. Pentagon police officers heard at least five shots around 4:50 a.m., Layman added.

According to another Pentagon Force Protection Agency spokesman, Terry Sutherland, two bullets hit the Pentagon on the south side of the building — one striking a window and the other hitting the building itself. This is an unoccupied part of the building that is being renovated.

Sutherland said a fragment of one of the bullets is lodged in the window. The windows, which are bullet-proof, did not shatter.

October 18, 2010

It appears that WikiLeaks is expected to release 400,000 documents related to the war in Iraq.

From CNN:

The last huge WikiLeaks leak came in July when the site published what was dubbed The Afghan Diary, a compilation of more than 70,000 classified documents about the Afghanistan war. WikiLeaks was heavily criticized by human rights organizations, leaders within the U.S. government,  high-ranking Pentagon officials and security experts for publishing the names of Afghan informants, thereby possibly putting their lives at risk.

Bradley Manning, who served as an intelligence analyst in Iraq, is the military’s focus in the investigation into the leaks. The 22-year-old remains behind bars in Washington.

I can’t believe that it has been 9 years since the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.

I can still remember sitting at the airport in Burbank, waiting for my then fiancee, now wife, to land on her flight from San Jose. Quite a few anxious moments!

Where were you when the world stopped turning…that September day?

December 1, 2009

That is the question being asked today.

According to Tareq Salahi, he and his wife didn’t crash the White House state dinner last week.

From CNN:

The Obama administration said Salahi and his wife, Michaele Salahi, attended but had not been invited to the state dinner for visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and officials say they got into the event because of a breach in security.

Appearing on NBC’s “Today” show with his wife, Tareq Salahi said the aftermath of the incident has been “the most devastating thing that’s ever happened to us.”

“We’re greatly saddened by all the circumstances that have, you know, been involved and portraying my wife and I as party crashers. I can tell you, we did not party crash the White House.”

Salahi said he and his wife “are cooperating extensively with the U.S. Secret Service” in their investigation of the incident and said “the truth will soon come out.”
