Twitter Announcement: Paula Abdul Leaving American Idol

August 5, 2009

Oh, the power of social media and Twitter!

Paula Abdul announced via Twitter yesterday that she will not be returning to “American Idol” for the reality shows upcoming ninth season.

From the Los Angeles Times:

Abdul – along with Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson – has been judging “American Idol’ since Season 1 in 2002. This surprising news comes just hours after it was confirmed that Kara DioGuardi is returning to the “American Idol” judging panel this season. Auditions in front of the judges begin Thursday in Denver.

Paula Abdul had been negotiating a new contract to remain on “American Idol.” She was said to be seeking a substantial increase to her current pay of between $2 million and $4 million. While Fox was said to be willing to go above $5 million per season, in the end the two sides could not agree on a final number.

Paula Abdul disclosed her decision to leave the show in a series of posts to Twitter. “With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to Idol,” came first, followed in quick succession by three more tweets: “I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 become an international phenomenon,” and then, “What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me” and, finally, “It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month.”

American Idol Judge Defends Her Attack on “Bikini Girl”

January 15, 2009

I didn’t watch the episode, but it seems that this is the entertainment story that everyone has been talking about. Did anyone watch the episode? What were your thoughts?

It only took “American Idol’s” judging newbie, Kara DioGuardi, one episode to leave a memorable mark on season eight of the televised talent search.

In an attempt to dash the dreams of a bikini-clad hopeful, the panelist sang over the wannabe and gave the contender a pointed piece of her mind. Her tactic didn’t work, as Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson have a preference for talent-packed bikinis, but DioGuardi told Ryan Seacrest she has no regrets.

Seacrest, this time wearing his KISS FM hosting hat, accused “AI’s” newest leading lady of having a problem with “pretty girls” after she told Katrina Darrell, better known now as Bikini Girl, that she just didn’t have the chops to sing Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love.”

“I love pretty girls,” DioGuardi insisted, before pondering whether or not the contestant in question was even all that pretty. “The thing with Bikini Girl, to be honest with you — I think she had a better body than her face.”

After taking that swipe, DioGuardi gave Bikini Girl a measure of props, before going in for one more low blow.

“To her credit, (Darrell) got so much attention, it was probably a good call,” the judge said of the singer’s barely there attire. “But we wouldn’t be talking about the bikini if she killed the song.”

Then again, Seacrest wouldn’t have brought up DioGuardi’s take on hotties, if she hadn’t engaged a contestant in an on-air sing-off. That’s behavior unbefitting a judge, after all.

So, Who Is Kara DioGuardi (New American Idol Judge)?

January 13, 2009

I’m not the biggest fan of the show, but I have seen it more than a few times. I loved the season with Carrie Underwood 🙂

So people keep asking me, who is Kara DioGuardi?

Well, MTV has a short article on her and I thought that I would share it with you.

From MTV:

We all know Simon Cowell has produced dozens of successful TV shows, Paula Abdul had her pop-star and Laker Girl days, and Randy Jackson won’t let us forget who he’s worked with (Mariah Carey, Journey … the list goes on).

But who is Kara DioGuardi and why was she picked to be the fourth judge on “American Idol”? Here are some things you should know about DioGuardi — from the singer/songwriter herself — before settling in for tonight’s two-hour premiere:

She Knows Her Way Around a Diva
“I’ve worked with a lot of these singers that are out there that are great, from Christina to Pink to Celine Dion. I’ve been in the studio with them when they’ve actually recorded songs that we’ve co-written. And I’ve worked very closely with them in both listening to how they interpret the songs we’ve written and giving them guidance and support.”

She’s Still Hard at Work on Non-”Idol” Business
“I haven’t slept today. I was working with Colbie Caillat in Hawaii, so I’ve been up almost 48 hours now. She’s just great. I love her voice. To listen to her sing is such a pleasure, and she has such a great tonal quality and such emotion in her voice.”

She Had a Hand in Kelly Clarkson’s Biggest Album
“I had a very close relationship with Kelly. I co-wrote six songs on
Breakaway and co-produced ‘Walk Away.’ I love Kelly, because I could just sing anything or tell her to sing anything, and she could sing it. She was feisty. She put her personality into the songs, and for the style of writing that I was doing at the time, that rock/pop angsty stuff, she was just perfect. And she was great to co-write with, and I had an incredible experience with her.”

She’s Dying to Work With Daughtry
“I really like Daughtry. I would love to co-write with him. At one point, it looked like he was going to do a duet on a song that I had written, but it never happened. So, if he’s out there and he wants to do a co-write, please call me!”

She Already Has Her Signature “Idol” Line
“I would say right now my line that I would tell these kids is ‘Be you. Don’t try to be anybody but you.’ ”

Former American Idol Contestant Commits Suicide Near Paul Abdul’s Home

November 12, 2008

Crazy? Obsessive? Nuts? All of these words come to mind. Police say a fan of Paula Abdul has been found dead in a car parked near a home belonging to the “American Idol” judge.

The victim has been identified as Paula Goodspeed, whose rendition of “Proud Mary” was roundly criticized by Simon Cowell and rejected by Abdul herself and fellow judge Randy Jackson. An official cause of death had not been determined.

Goodspeed’s audition was aired during the 2006 season. During her audition, she told Ryan Seacrest that she was a huge fan of Abdul and created life-size paintings of the singer and former Laker Girl.

From the Associated Press:

A fan of Paula Abdul whose failed audition for “American Idol” aired in season five was found dead in a car near the home of the pop star and judge she admired, authorities said Wednesday.

Authorities found Goodspeed’s body Tuesday evening in a car that photos show bearing the vanity license plate “ABL LV” in a Los Angeles Lakers frame. Her parents had reported her missing hours earlier and expressed concern that she might hurt herself.

Los Angeles police spokeswoman Julianne Sohn says officers responded to a call about 6 p.m. Tuesday and arrived in the Sherman Oaks area to find the body.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened at what transpired yesterday,” Abdul said in a statement released by her publicist, Jeff Ballard. “My heart and prayers go out to her family.”

American Idol Adds Fourth Judge

August 25, 2008

It was announced today that grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi is joining American Idol as a judge for its eighth season which begins in January 2009. DioGuardi has written songs for artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Santana and Faith Hill.

From the Associated Press:

Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi will sit alongside Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson when the eighth season of “American Idol” premieres in January, the Fox network said Monday.

“For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges’ table,” said Mike Darnell, president, alternative programming of Fox, in a statement.

“With Kara by her side, Paula has some backup and now there is going to be a lot more `girl power’ on the show,” Darnell said.

“We are turning the heat up on `Idol’ this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges’ table,” said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller in a statement. “She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America’s most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show.”

I’m not really a huge fan of the show, except for the season when Carrie Underwood performed, but it is definitely a pop culture phenomenon. Let’s hope that the addition of DioGuardi will help ease the load on Ms. Abdul. Thoughts?
