December 23, 2010

No time for updates on Casey and Caylee Anthony, Julian Assange or the plethora of College Football Bowl Games!

Today we have Jeff Dunham and his friend Achmed the Dead Terrorist!

“I got though checkpoint A…but not though checkpoint B…that’s when I got shot in the A$$ by the US Military…”

Happy Holidays to all…and to all a good night!

Let the BCS BS Continue…

October 24, 2010

We’re still 8 hours away from the latest BCS poll coming out, but I can already smell more controversy. What else can you expect from a broken system where a Champion is decided by computers.

While I don’t know how the new BCS poll is going to break out, here is what I expect to see come 5 p.m. (PT) this afternoon:

1. Auburn

2. Oregon

3. Boise State

4. TCU

5. Michigan State

Whether I’m right or not, I have no clue. But, after seeing how the BCS moved Oklahoma to the top of the heap last week, it only stands to reason that Auburn will move up to number one, jumping over fellow undefeated Oregon and Boise State. I understand jumping Boise State. As much as I LOVE the Broncos, the only way that they will get into the National Championship game is if they go undefeated, and there are no other undefeated teams from the Big 5 conferences (I only put 5 because I believe that it is a TRAVESTY that teams from the Big East are even considered in a BCS conference).

But jumping the Oregon Ducks…this is just wrong. Don’t get me wrong…Auburn is one of the top teams in the country, and they have shown this on the field. But, Oregon SHOULD be number one. Auburn has played better competition, but they have only been impressive in a couple of their games. They’ve won a handful of games by less than a touchdown, while Oregon has DOMINATED the teams that they have played.

Is it an East Coast bias…maybe. Is the BCS a joke…yes! Something must be done, and done quickly. I will continue to say this every week…a playoff system needs to be implemented. Let’s take the top 16 teams and let them battle it out at the end of the season. What’s the best sporting event of the year? The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Look at the excitement around the three weeks of March Madness! I have two words for you which demonstrate the need for a tournament like we see in college basketball: Butler Bulldogs. The little school came within a 3 pointer of defeating the Duke Blue Devils in the championship game earlier this year. Boise State is the Butler of football. Shouldn’t they be given a chance too? Let’s play the games on the field…not on computers!

Who would you put #1? Will #1 go down for a fourth straight week next week? Who finishes the season #1 and 2?

The Tide Has Turned…#1 Alabama Goes Down

October 9, 2010

Congrats to South Carolina! The cocks got beaten pretty badly today but in the end, they stood tall in a victory over #1 Alabama.

It’ll be interesting to see how far the Crimson Tide drops in the polls…and to make things even more interesting, the first BCS poll comes out next weekend!

Assuming the Oregon Ducks win today, here is my new Top 10:

1. Ohio State

2. Oregon

3. Boise State

4. TCU

5. Nebraska

6. Alabama

7. Oklahoma

8. Auburn

9. Arizona

10. Utah

I find it hard to place Alabama. In reality, I’d love to rank them about #8 but in reality, I see them landing at #5.

Thoughts?

Reggie Bush Stripped of Heisman Trophy

September 7, 2010

Bad news for fans of Reggie Bush as Yahoo Sports is reporting this morning that the former star running back at USC  is expected to be stripped of his 2005 Heisman Trophy and the award will be left vacant.

From CBS News:

Sources tell Yahoo! Sports that the Heisman Trust is expected to revoke college football’s top honor from the former USC star by the end of the month.

USC won 12 games during Bush’s Heisman-winning 2005 season, which ended with a loss to Texas in the 2006 BCS title game.

Sources said the trust will strip Bush of his award and leave the honor for that season vacant. It would be the first time the trophy has been revoked in the award’s 75-year history, Yahoo! Sports reports.

Say What You Will About Boise State…

September 6, 2010

…the team from the Pacific Northwest who plays on the “Smurf Turf” can play with the big boys!

Tonight, the Boise State Broncos went on the road to a “neutral” site game, jumped out to an early lead, fell behind in the second half, but came back to defeat Virginia Tech, a top ten team from a BCS conference. Did I mention that this “neutral” site game was played less than 300 miles from the Virginia Tech campus? Say what you will about Boise State…they aren’t going away anytime soon.

Yes, some will say that the referee’s handed Boise State the game (I disagree) but the game was entertaining and wasn’t decided until the final minute. It most definitely lived up to the hype that has surrounded it over the past couple of weeks.

I’ve heard people say that they’re sick of Boise State. That if they played a “real” schedule, they would go 8-4 every year. That they are bad for college football. In the end, I have to disagree with these people. Other than three games a year, Boise State is mandated to play the schedule they do during the season. yes, they don’t play the schedule that a team in the SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or Pac 10 play. But, when they play in big games, they’ve won, beating Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU and Virginia Tech.

Are they bad for college football? I don’t think so. They have come out of obscurity to become a team that has consistently gone to bowl games, and even BCS bowl games. Yes, compared to other top teams out there such as Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Texas and more, they may not be able to compete week in and week out with the pure talent of these teams. But, they’re playing the hand their dealt and you have to respect the job that the team and especially the coaching staff has done to build this successful program.

Who knows. This is only the first game of the season and they COULD lose a game, dropping them right out of the National Championship picture. Only time will tell. That’s why they play the game, right?

Feel free to chime in with your comments. I’m sure that Boise State will be discussed quite often between now and January.

USC Gets Two Year Ban

June 10, 2010

The NCAA handed down some harsh penalties to the University of Southern California today, including a two-year ban from bowl games, citing major violations by both the football and men’s basketball programs.

From the Los Angeles Times:

Citing a history of misdeeds that “strike at the heart” of college amateurism, the NCAA hit USC with a string of penalties Thursday that will keep the powerhouse Trojans football team out of bowl games for the next two seasons and could cost the university millions of dollars.

The sanctions, which also involve men’s basketball and women’s tennis, culminated a four-year investigation that began with separate reports that two star athletes – Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush and basketball forward O.J. Mayo – had accepted improper gifts from outside sports marketers and agents.
