Woman Who Brought Gun to Child’s Soccer Game Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide

October 8, 2009

I remember the original story when it hit the news last year. It seems that it has come to a tragic end as a suburban mother who fought in court for the right to openly carry a loaded handgun at her daughter’s youth soccer game was fatally shot yesterday along with her parole-officer husband in an apparent murder-suicide at their home in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

From the Associated Press:

Police released scanty details about the deaths of Meleanie Hain, 31, and Scott Hain, 33, but said more information would be released Friday after their autopsies.

“I’m devastated. I lost my daughter. I lost my best friend. The children lost their parents,” Jenny Stanley, Meleanie Hain’s mother, told WGAL-TV. Stanley added that the three children, ages 2, 6 and 10, are “hanging in there.”

The children were at a neighbor’s house by the time police arrived to answer 911 calls from neighbors, said Lebanon City Police Chief Daniel Wright.

“What they did or did not see as part of this is not something we’re going to release,” Wright said.

Neighbors said the children ran outside and said their father had shot their mother, but Wright declined to disclose what investigators have concluded about how the deaths occurred.

He said authorities recovered more than one weapon from the home and acknowledged reports that the couple might have been having marital difficulties.

“I’m not going to confirm that now, but I’m not going to dispute it either,” Wright said.

Meleanie Hain had run a day care at her home, and children’s toys remain scattered in the front yard Thursday. A car parked in the driveway bore a badge-shaped sticker that read “NRA law enforcement.”

Hain made headlines in 2008 when she attended a soccer game of her daughter’s, then 5, at a park with a Glock holstered on her hip in plain view. That upset other parents.

Sarah Palin Selected as John McCain’s Running Mate

August 29, 2008

Well, we are assured history in this year’s Presidential election. We will either have our first African-American President in Barack Obama, or our first woman Vice President. Senator John McCain has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, this according to CNN this morning.

From the New York Times:

She hunts! She fishes! She eats moose burgers! She can gut a salmon as well as dispatch an incumbent governor! She’s a rural mother of five who clings to guns and religion -– exuberantly!

In choosing as his running mate Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, two years removed from her only other political job as a small-town mayor, John McCain has certainly offered up a giant-killer -– “Sarah Barracuda,” as she’s known in the Last Frontier State.

Palin, who has more than a passing resemblance to Tina Fey, took on the kleptocracy of Alaska’s Republican politics and won.

First, she ousted hated incumbent Frank Murkowski in a primary two years ago, and then promptly cleaned up his mess in Juneau, even selling his private jet on e-bay. Second, she rejected the “bridge to nowhere,” the famous earmark for a span from Ketchikan to an island of 50 people -– further angering the politicians-for-life who have run Alaska for half as long as it’s been in the union.

But she has her own ethics concern, the subject of an investigation of whether the governor’s office was involved in the firing a state trooper who was in the midst of a nasty divorce from Palin’s sister — Troopergate with a bit of Alaska Gothic thrown in. And McCain’s selection -– a woman who looks young enough to be his college-age daughter -– makes it hard for Republicans to criticize Barack Obama for his in inexperience. Palin is an inoculation for what may be the biggest rap against Obama. That’s a huge risk.

From CNN:

Palin, 44, who’s in her first term as governor, is a pioneering figure in Alaska, the first woman and the youngest person to hold the state’s top political job.

She catapulted to the post with a strong reputation as a political outsider, forged during her stint in local politics. She was mayor and a council member of the small town of Wasila and was chairman of the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which regulates Alaska’s oil and gas resources, in 2003 and 2004.

The conservative Palin defeated two so-called political insiders to win the governor’s job — incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the GOP primary and former two-term Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles in the 2006 general election. iReport.com: What do you think of McCain’s VP pick?

Palin made her name in part by backing tough ethical standards for politicians. During the first legislative session after her election, her administration passed a state ethics law overhaul.

Palin’s term has not been without controversy. A legislative investigation is looking into allegations that Palin fired Alaska’s public safety commissioner because he refused to fire the governor’s former brother-in-law, a state trooper.

Palin has focused on energy and natural resources policy during her short stint in office, and she is known for her support of drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, a position opposed by McCain but supported by many grass-roots Republicans.

Her biography on the state governor’s Web site says one of the two major pieces of legislation passed during her first legislative session was a competitive process to construct a gas pipeline.
