Minnesota Twins Legend Harmon Killebrew Dies

May 17, 2011

Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew died this morning at the age of 74.

The Major League Baseball legend passed away at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona after a long battle with esophageal cancer.

From ESPN:

“With the continued love and support of my wife, Nita, I have exhausted all options,” Killebrew said in a statement Friday. He added: “I have spent the past decade of my life promoting hospice care and educating people on its benefits. I am very comfortable taking this next step and experiencing the compassionate care that hospice provides.”

Killebrew was receiving treatment at a branch of the Mayo Clinic nearby after his diagnosis in December. He expressed optimism at the time, saying he expected to make a full recovery while acknowledging he was in “perhaps the most difficult battle” of his life.

Twitter Down Again…

August 5, 2010

I’m used to seeing the “fail whale” on Twitter, but today I’m seeing a robot with a missing hand. Very strange indeed!

Anybody know if there is an issue with Twitter, or if there is some large news story that’s causing the outage? I hope I’m not missing Brett Favre’s announcement 🙂

Indianapolis Colts Advance to Super Bowl

January 24, 2010

The Indianapolis Colts have advanced to the Super Bowl, which will take place this year in Miami on Sunday, February 7. Their opponent will be either the Minnesota Vikings or New Orleans Saints, who play each other in the NFC championship later today.

The Jets held a 17-13 lead at halftime (and at one time led 17-6) but the home team dominated the second half on their way to a 30-17 victory. Peyton Manning absolutely shredded the Jets defense this afternoon for 377 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Before the season began, I picked the Colts and the Vikings in the Super Bowl. I still feel that this will be the match-up, although it will be VERY difficult to knock off the Saints at the Superdome.

No matter who wins the NFC Championship game, it should definitely be a fun Super Bowl this year! Manning vs. Favre or Brees? You have to think it’ll be high scoring!

Freight Trains Collide Near Minnesota/Wisconsin Border

December 17, 2008

Two freight trains collided this morning near the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, sending derailed cars plummeting into the Mississippi River and sparking a liquid ammonia leak.

From the Associated Press:

Emergency crews were sent to the scene near the Wisconsin border after the collision at around 5.30a.m. local time.

NBC News affiliate WTMJ reported that up to 40 railway cars were involved but it was unclear how many were in the river.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand told KAGE Radio that two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Officials said the ammonia leak posed no danger to the public.

One train had reportedly left Portage, Wis., and was heading to St. Paul, Minn.

Barack Obama Wins New York, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Michigan and Wisconsin

November 5, 2008

CNN has projected Barack Obama as the winner in New York, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Michigan and Wisconsin. John McCain has won North Dakota and Wyoming.

From CNN:

CNN projects that Sen. Barack Obama will pick up five more states and Sen. John McCain will win three.

Obama is projected to pick up Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. McCain will pick up Alabama, North Dakota and Wyoming, CNN projects.

Polls are also closed in the key states of Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia, but the races there are too close to call.

Obama currently has 174 electoral votes and McCain has 49.

CNN earlier projected that Obama will win Pennsylvania, a state that McCain campaigned in heavily in the final weeks before the election.

McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, visited the state 10 times in recent weeks as they tried to turn the blue state red.

Obama’s projected wins include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Vermont and Washington.

Crystal Meth Found in Child’s Halloween Bag

November 4, 2008

Trick or treat! Minnesota police say that a 7 year old boy found a bag of Crystal Meth in his Halloween bag  worth approximately $200.

From the Associated Press:

When their children returned from Halloween trick-or-treating, a couple found suspected methamphetamine and $85 in cash among their 7-year-old son’s Snickers bars and Skittles.

Lars and Shelly Brosdahl called police, who confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine, worth up to $200 on the street.

Someone who looked like a teenager dropped something into their son’s bag as he went trick-or-treating with his 9-year-old sister on Halloween night, the Brosdahls say.

“He said some bigger kid ran by him and asked if he wanted some candy,” Lars Brosdahl said. “He said ‘Sure,’ and the kid dropped it into his bag.”

The clear crystals looked like rock candy, the parents said.

“The (kids) could have OD’d on it. That’s what makes me so shaky and upset,” Shelly Brosdahl said.
