Details Emerge in Murder of Steve McNair

October 20, 2009

It seems that the girlfriend of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair had grown frustrated with their relationship and was struggling with financial difficulties in the days leading up to their deaths back in July.

From USA Today:

Nashville police have released new details about the investigation into Steve McNair’s murder that show Sahel Kazemi had asked McNair for money and sent text messages about needing to be with him in the few days prior to their deaths on July 4.

The details were released in the middle of a two-part series aired on CBS’ Early Show criticizing the police investigation into the murder-suicide, although police officials have been working on a summary report of the investigation for several weeks.

From CNN:

McNair, 36, and Sahel Kazemi, 20, were found fatally shot in a condominium in downtown Nashville on July 4. Police have since ruled their deaths a murder-suicide.

“My life is just s— and I should end it,” Kazemi said the night before the couple were found dead, according to Sonya New, her shift manager at a Dave & Busters restaurant. New also said Kazemi was not her usual self and seemed down.

Though McNair was a married father of four, he was seeing Kazemi and at least one other woman, Leah Ignagni, according to Nashville police. McNair had spent the night at Ignagni’s apartment on July 2, two nights before he was killed, Ignagni told police.

Steve McNair Recently Filmed Suicide Prevention PSA

July 9, 2009

Steve McNair recently taped a youth suicide prevention public service announcement before he was fatally shot in a murder-suicide this past week.

From CNN:

The Tennessee health officials were “developing a PSA with Steve McNair, but it never reached the point of being aired. And it seems broadcasting it now is not only inappropriate, but doesn’t serve the community, his family or memory — or the issue we hoped the PSA would help address,” said Jill Hudson, a spokeswoman for Tennessee’s Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities.

Authorities have said that McNair was fatally shot by his mistress, who then killed herself. McNair was married and had four children.

The bodies of McNair, 36, and Sahel Kazemi, 20, were found in a condominium on Saturday afternoon in downtown Nashville, authorities said.

Steve McNair’s Death Ruled Murder-Suicide

July 8, 2009

Nashville police confirmed today that Steve McNair’s 20-year-old girlfriend killed him before turning the gun on herself.

From the Associated Press:

They said they may never know what was going through Sahel Kazemi’s mind when she shot McNair in his condominium early Saturday, but interviews with friends indicated she was becoming increasingly distraught over events in her life, including financial problems. Police said she also suspected McNair was seeing another woman.

She told a friend on Friday that “My life is a ball of s— and I should end it,” Police Chief Ronal Serpas said.

Police earlier had labeled McNair’s death a homicide, but awaited further tests and investigation before saying for sure what happened.

Steve McNair’s Girlfriend Bought Handgun Recently

July 6, 2009

Police are saying that the gun found at the scene where Steve McNair died was bought by his girlfriend this past Thursday.

From the Associated Press:

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said Monday that 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi bought the semiautomatic handgun Thursday evening from a person he didn’t name.

An autopsy showed that McNair and Kazemi died early Saturday. He was shot four times and his death has been ruled a homicide. She was shot once and Aaron said police are still waiting for ballistic and gunpowder residue tests before deciding if she was slain or committed suicide.

Where Does Sarah Palin Go From Here?

July 6, 2009

So, I go on vacation for a few days and come back to learn of quite a few major news stories, including the murder of Steve McNair and Sarah Palin resigning as Governor of Alaska. How do I miss these things?

The question now is: Where does Sarah Palin go from here? Is she going to hide away in obscurity? Will she run for President in 2012? Is there another scandal coming? Who knows!

From ABC News:

On many blogs this weekend, speculation ran rampant that a scandal is coming or that another shoe will drop.

But no evidence of anything more than rehashed rumors has appeared thus far.

After reports that she may have resigned because of a supposedly pending federal embezzlement investigation, her lawyers called such speculation false and warned in a letter to the media, “This is to provide notice … that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law.”

In a rare move, the FBI issued a statement to say there was no ongoing investigation of Palin.

Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will take over the top state job later this month, said Palin is resigning because of the mounting legal costs the state of Alaska and she personally are incurring because of several ethics complaints filed against her during her term as governor. Even though the charges have been dismissed, she still has steep legal fees.

“What seemed to weigh heavily upon her was the cost associated with all the records request, ethics complaints, the cost of staff time, the distractions,” Parnell told ABC News. “We are up to $2 million in costs to Alaskan taxpayers for that and I think there was just that sense that that was a burden to moving Alaska forward.”

Palin’s political opponents like Alaska senator and fellow Republican Lisa Murkowski have criticized Palin’s unexpected decision.

“I am deeply disappointed that the governor has decided to abandon the state and her constituents before her term has concluded,” Murkowski said.
