Kerri Walsh, Misty May-Treanor’s Win Streak Ends

September 1, 2008

It’s true! Coming off their gold medal victory in Beijing at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor lost for the first time in more than a year today, dropping a 21-19, 10-21, 25-23 decision to Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh at the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout.

From the Associated Press:

With the loss, the two-time Olympic champions’ winning streak ended at 112 matches and 19 titles. They last lost on Aug. 19, 2007, also to Branagh and Youngs.

The final took 1 hours, 45 minutes, making it the second longest women’s match in AVP history, missing the record by just a minute. May-Treanor and Walsh dropped to 10-2 in finals matches against Branagh and Youngs.

In the semifinals, May-Treanor and Walsh beat April Ross and Jen Boss 21-14, 23-21, and Youngs and Branagh edged Jenny Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis 20-22, 21-19, 15-11.

The beach volleyball team of Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor has won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Walsh and May defeated the team of Jie Wang and Jia Tian in two sets, 21-18, 21-18.

From the Associated Press:

Walsh and May-Treanor, who did not lose a single set in Beijing, extended their winning streak to 108 matches in a row.

Walsh put an early end to China’s chances to add a gold when she quick-hit May-Treanor’s pass between Wang and Tian. The Americans dropped to their knees on the wet sand, hugging each other before shaking hands with the officials and running to the stands to embrace their friends and families.

They were still celebrating, wrapping themselves in U.S. flags, as organizers worked through the rain to set up the podium for the medal ceremony.

Earlier Thursday, Xue Chen and Zhang Xi won China’s first beach volleyball medal, beating Brazilians Talita and Renata 21-19, 21-17 for the bronze.

From the Associated Press:

Walsh had no reason to worry on Tuesday, when the defending gold medalists easily defeated Renata Ribeiro and Talita Antunes 21-12, 21-14 for their 107th consecutive victory and the guarantee of at least a silver. The United States has now reached the podium in all four Olympics since beach volleyball was added to the games in 1996.

Walsh and May-Treanor will play top-seeded Tian Jia and Wang Jie, who beat the other Chinese team of Xue Chen and Zhang Xi 22-24, 29-27, 15-8 in a grueling, 1 hour and 14 minutes. Xue collapsed on the sand for several minutes afterward; the medical staff surrounded her, but she waved off a stretcher and instead just took an ice pack to help cool her off.

Xue and Zhang will play Talita and Renata for third place.

Walsh and May-Treanor will be the favorites in the final, even though they are the second-seeded team in the tournament. The team has won 107 straight matches, and I anticipate a 108th straight victory over the Chinese team. Thoughts?

From ESPN:

Larissa and Ana Paula were forced together when Larrisa’s regular teammate, Julianna, injured her anterior cruciate ligament and pulled out on the eve of the Olympics. The two had never even practiced together until the morning of their first match.

From the Los Angeles Times:

The pink, blue, yellow and green ponchos that appeared early Sunday morning at a rainy Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground gave Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh’s quarterfinal match a rainbow backdrop.

The match — the American duo’s 67th straight international victory — served to underscore May-Treanor and Walsh’s rare longevity as this sport’s most successful partnership.
