Planes Nearly Collide at JFK

June 22, 2011

A Lufthansa jet nearly collided with another plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday evening after an EgyptAir flight apparently veered into its path just as the plane headed down the runway.

From CNN:

The near miss was captured on audio recordings, revealing an air traffic controller communicating with the Lufthansa pilot, yelling “Cancel takeoff! Cancel takeoff plans!” as the two planes moved toward each other.

The pilot of the Lufthansa jet acknowledged as the plane rolled to a halt.

Lufthansa Flight 411, an Airbus 340 packed with 286 passengers and crew, was cleared for takeoff by air traffic control shortly before 7 p.m. Monday, according to a statement from Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

EgyptAir Flight 986, a Boeing 777, was issued instructions to taxi from the ramp area to the airfield for departure, but made a wrong turn, the statement said.

Small Jet Crashes Near Chicago

January 5, 2010

The pilot and co-pilot of a small cargo jet were killed when their aircraft crashed short of the runway while landing at an airport in near Chicago earlier today.

From CNN:

The Learjet 35A was on its final approach into Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, Illinois, when it went down about 1:30 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration reported. The plane crashed into a forest preserve about a mile south of the runway and ended up in a river, said Jay Reardon, the head of a multi-agency firefighting task force that responded to the crash.

The two-man crew was found dead at the scene, Reardon said. No emergency was declared before the crash.

“To our knowledge, everything appeared normal up until the aircraft was reported down by the tower at Chicago Executive Airport,” Reardon said.

More Air France Crash Debris Found

June 3, 2009

Searchers found more debris today from an Air France jet that plunged into the Atlantic Ocean earlier this week.

From CNN:

Two debris fields were found Tuesday, with the wreckage identified as coming from Flight 447.

The Airbus A330 carrying 228 people went down about three hours after beginning what was to have been an 11-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, France.

Among the debris found Wednesday were various objects in a circular 5-kilometer (3-mile) area; one object with a diameter of 7 meters (23 feet); 10 objects, some of which were metallic; and an oil slick that extended as far as 20 kilometers (12 miles), said Brazilian Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral.

The latest debris was found about 90 kilometers (56 miles) south of Tuesday’s discovery, Amaral said. The earlier debris was about 650 kilometers (400 miles) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha Islands, an archipelago 355 kilometers (220 miles) off the northeast coast of Brazil.

Child Still Missing in San Diego Jet Crash

December 9, 2008

Authorities in San Diego have resumed a search this morning for a child missing in the wreckage of a residential area where a military F-18 fighter jet crash killed three people.

From the Associated Press:

Rescue workers returned to the search Tuesday morning. Their work had been suspended during the night.

The F/A-18D Hornet fighter jet crashed Monday near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

Three people — a mother, her baby and a grandmother — were killed and officials said a fourth person, believed to be a small child, was in the house and had not been found.

The pilot escaped from the plane before the crash. He was found suspended by his parachute in a tree and he was being treated at a hospital.

Two homes were destroyed and three were damaged.
