UPDATE: I caught Jeff Dunham on Letterman. Did exactly what he said he would during the San Jose show. Good stuff. Letterman seemed to enjoy!
*If you’ve seen Jeff Dunham live, let me hear your thoughts on his live show*
It wouldn’t be prudent if I didn’t begin with “Silence….I kill you!”
Comedian Jeff Dunham made a stop in San Jose last night at the HP Pavillion, home of the San Jose Sharks. It was a great night for comedy as a sell out crowd filled the arena for the 8 p.m. show.
For those of you who don’t know him, Dunham is a ventriloquist and stand-up comedian who has also appeared on numerous television shows, including Star Search, Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central Presents and The Tonight Show. Most people know him from Comedy Central and his three specials on that network: Jeff Dunham: Arguing With Myself, Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity, and Jeff Dunham’s Very Special Christmas Special.
The night began with Brian Haner, also known as “Guitar Guy”. He joined up with Dunham recently and has been featured on the Christmas special as well as numerous videos on YouTube. Haner warmed up the audiences with a few songs about OJ, Oprah, The Octuplet Mom and others. Really good stuff and a talented guitar player.
After a fifteen minute intermission, it was time for the main event! Dunham did some great standup (minus puppets) talking about his trip to Medford, Oregon which was diverted to Klamath Falls instead. To make a long story short, the military had guns drawn, pointed at their heads and Dunham asked if anyone knew Achmed the Terrorist! Ha Ha!
Walter came out first, and did his usual schtick. Good joking with Dunham about “Manuel” the bathroom attendant and of course, Walter’s wife.
My personal favorite, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, was second and he had us rolling in the aisle with not only his signature “Silence, I kill you” but he had plenty of good stories about his terrorist days and dating. I loved his discussion with Dunham about the cotton “missiles/bombs” that he found in his drawers. The little string “fuse” and the special guided missiles “with wings” classic.
As always, Guitar Guy came back out to perform with Achmed and Dunham did his best to make him laugh. I’d love to give away a lot of what was said, but number one, I need to keep the site clean, and number two, I don’t want to ruin the show for anyone else who goes. If you want answers, just email me!
Peanut came out third and was accompanied (only briefly) by Jose Jalapeno…on a steeeek! Peanut was in rare form tonight with lots to say. He easily had the largest laughter of the night during his “Taste of China” routine. I’ve heard this before but its just as funny the second, third and fourth time.
Dunham also brought out some jokes with Peanut to practice for the Late Show with David Letterman, which he’ll be performing on tomorrow night. Can’t wait to see that!
I’d love to tell everyone what the phrase of the night was, but like I said, this is a clean site. OK, I’ll just put some symbols in to cover up the actual words :) Smooshed P*&%y! Sometime early in the show, the term was used and it ended up being used the rest of the show for some good laughs. Note to Dunham, keep this in the act!
Bubba J was brought out for the encore and did the same act as the DVD. What was great was that the audience was reciting the act word for word. Dunham looked to be having a good time with it!
It appeared that the night was over when a large cake with Walter, Achmed and Peanut came rolling out on stage. It turns out that April 18 is Jeff Dunham’s birthday! Sweet! He seem genuinely appreciative of the GREAT looking cake and the crowd sang happy birthday! Great end to the evening!
This was my first time seeing Dunham live and it won’t be my last. Overall, a great show with a lot of new material. Even the old stuff was good! I loved getting nearly an hour of Achmed who was the character I had hoped to see most. I highly recommend taking in this show if it comes to your town. If you can’t, be sure to pick up one of the DVD’s!
