Kerri Walsh Announces She is Pregnant With First Child

December 4, 2008

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh is pregnant with her first child. The beach volleyball superstar, and San Jose native, confirmed this in an exclusive interview with Billy Bush for Access Hollywood. Congratulations to the happy couple!!!

From NBC:

“I’m chubby and I’m pregnant and it’s awesome!” Kerri told Billy on Wednesday morning.

And as it turns out, a gold medal wasn’t the only thing Kerri and husband Casey Jennings brought home from the games in Beijing.

“How pregnant are you?” Billy asked.

“About 16-and-a-half weeks,” she revealed.

“Let’s do the math… that goes back to about the beginning of August,” Billy noted.

“Well, they way they date pregnancies is a little bit confusion. We believe we conceived during our last days in Beijing, or about a couple of days after we won the gold medal.”

But Billy challenged her on the math.

“I don’t think so!” he said jokingly with her. “If it’s sixteen-and-a-half weeks, that’s one week into August! Kerri, have you considered honestly that you were pregnant at the time when you won the gold medal?”

“I think it’s impossible, but you never know!” she admitted. “I don’t want to get into all of the details, but I’m pretty sure it was a couple of days after.”

Fresh off her gold medal victory, Kerri and Casey spoke with Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson on the scene in Beijing about the win and their possible plans for a family.

“So is this now the time?” Shaun asked the couple, hinting at expanding their family.

“I’m in!” Kerri beamed.

“Yea, that would be a third gold medal, wouldn’t it?” Casey smiled.

Beach Volleyball Stars Walsh and May-Treanor Ponder Parenthood After Olympics

August 13, 2008

Looks like after the Olympics, we won’t be seeing Kerri Walsh or Misty May-Treanor playing much beach volleyball. According to the Associated Press, Walsh and May-Treanor will settle down and start families of their own sometime after the end of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

From the article:

Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor are planning to go from barefoot to pregnant.

The beach volleyball teammates intend to take some time off after the Olympics and start families with their husbands, a move they’ve delayed so they can compete in Beijing and go for their second straight gold medal.

“Misty and I absolutely want to win a gold medal and then start a family,” Walsh said Tuesday after the Athens Olympic champions improved to 2-0 in the Beijing opening round with a straight sets victory over Cuba. “I have so much love to give, and I just want to share it.”

As partners on the professional beach volleyball tour, Walsh and May-Treanor spend a lot of time together during the season, a sisterhood that gives them a sense of kinship but doesn’t quite satisfy all of their familial yearnings.

They’re like family. But they’re not really family.

“I’ve been ready forever,” Walsh said. “I thought I’d have like three babies by now.”
It will be interesting to see how this works out for each of the superstars. Having kids, and taking time off from playing to raise them, could create an opening in 2009 for new dominant players to emerge. But it could also leave Walsh looking for a new playing partner because she has stated that she wants to bring her kids on the tour with her, whereas May-Treanor does not.
Either way, I’m willing to bet that their kids are great athletes, whether in beach volleyball or another sport. Walsh is married to fellow beach volleyball player Casey Jennings and May-Treanor is married to Florida Marlins catcher Matt Treanor. Thoughts?

George Bush and Misty May: The Slap Seen Round the World

August 13, 2008

Oh George, you sly devil. Let’s just hope for your sake that Laura wasn’t around for this one.

While visiting with Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor of the US Women’s Olympic Beach Volleyball team, the President learned about some of the wonderful traditions of beach volleyball.

From the Associated Press:

After slipping into dry clothes, the president headed for the beach volleyball at Chaoyang Park, getting sandy with defending gold medalist Misty May-Treanor on the practice courts during a half-hour stop.

Bush posed for pictures with the U.S. players and staff. May-Treanor and her partner Kerri Walsh took a break in practice so Bush could try out a few bumps himself.

The president needs some work on his passing, mis-hitting a pair off his knuckles. When May-Treanor passed the ball back to him, he acted like he was going to dive after it but decided to stay on his feet.

Then May-Treanor turned her back to the president, offering her bikinied rear for one of the traditional slaps that volleyball players frequently give each other.

“Mr. President, want to?” she asked, repeating an offer she made when Bush gave a pep talk to the U.S. athletes before Friday’s opening ceremonies.

Bush smilingly gave a flick with the back of his hand to the small of her back instead.

And from the Los Angeles Times:

Although it must have been a thrill for Mr. Bush to shake hands with Kobe, Mello, King James and Coach K, it’s difficult to imagine that the president’s trip to Beijing didn’t peak when he received an up-close and personal beach volleyball lesson at Chaoyang Park from defending gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.

This photo will probably be the source of jokes for weeks to come. I for one saw this on TV and was a little surprised but got a great laugh out of it. It was nice to have a short lived, light hearted moment when there are so many other serious issues going on in the US and around the world.

I’m also pretty sure that there are a lot of people out there who would have loved the opportunity to get “up close and personal” like this.

Kerri Walsh’s Lost Wedding Ring

August 12, 2008

This must be every beach volleyball players worst nightmare (except for that bathing suit falling off on national television).

During her first round US Olympic volleyball match, Kerri Walsh lost her wedding ring somewhere in the sand.

From the Associated Press:

When American beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh’s wedding ring flew off during her opening match of the Olympics, venue workers combed the sand with metal detectors to find it. Volunteer Song Zhendong dug it up after about 20 minutes.

The ring came off when Walsh went up for a block in Sunday morning’s match against Japan’s Mika Saiki and Chiaki Kusuhara. American broadcasters could see what happened, and they called officials from the international volleyball federation to see if the ring could be recovered.

It might not be the last golden bauble for Walsh, who is married to fellow beach volleyball pro and former NCAA champion Casey Jennings. She and partner Misty May-Treanor won the gold medal at the Athens Games in 2004 and are the favorites to repeat in Beijing.

With 17,000 tons of sand brought into Chaoyang Park to create the beach volleyball venue, Walsh certainly is lucky to have had her ring recovered and returned to her. My question is this: Why would you wear the ring during a match in the first place? Thoughts?
