Casey Anthony: Jury Hears Her Interview with Police

June 2, 2011

Jurors today listened to to Casey Anthony’s hour-long interview with detectives the day after Caylee was reported missing back in 2008.

From the Associated Press:

Lead detective Yuri Melich took the stand again Thursday morning, on the eighth day of testimony in Anthony’s murder trial. The Orlando woman is accused of killing her daughter Caylee.

Anthony told detectives Caylee had called her a day earlier, saying, “Hi, Mommy,” before talking about books and shoes.

She also said during the interview that she would never be able to forgive herself.

“My mom flat out told me yesterday she will never be able to forgive me,” Casey Anthony said.

As Melich and another detective peppered her with questions, Anthony said she asked the child to let her talk to an adult, but the phone went dead.

Anthony, 25, insisted she was not lying when she said a baby sitter kidnapped Caylee on June 9, 2008.

Casey Anthony: Defendant Lied About Universal Studios Job

June 2, 2011

Leonard Turtora, assistant manager of loss prevention at Universal Studios, has testified that after he was contacted by authorities, he searched through the Universal Studios employee database and found that Casey Anthony had not worked there in years.

From CNN:

According to testimony, Anthony claimed to work as an event planner at Universal Studios until after Caylee was reported missing.

During the police investigation, lead detective Yuri Melich called Anthony and put her on a speakerphone with Turtora, who testified she insisted she worked there and gave a Thomas Manley as her supervisor. Manley also was not found in the database. During the call, Melich asked her if she was an event planner for marketing or entertainment, Turtora testified, and she said a little bit of both. “I knew that couldn’t be true,” Turtora said.

Eventually, Anthony was forced to own up to the lie after detectives brought her to Universal Studios and met Turtora there. She directed them to a building Turtora said he knew was not an events building.

“Melich began to look around and asked if we were in the events building,” Turtora said. “Ms. Anthony looked at me, put her hands in her back pocket and stated, ‘I don’t work here.'”

Casey Anthony: Defendant Lied About Boyfriend

June 2, 2011

During his testimony, Jeff Hopkins, an alleged “a wealthy suitor”, testified that while he knew Casey Anthony from middle school, her claims of dating him and his introducing her to Zenaida Gonzalez were not true.

From CNN:

Hopkins, 26, said his name wasn’t even Jeffrey Michael Hopkins — the name Anthony had given as a wealthy suitor living in Jacksonville, with a son named Zachary.

Anthony’s mother, Cindy Anthony, previously testified her daughter spoke often about Hopkins, describing him as a former coworker at Universal who had introduced her to Gonzalez, purportedly employed as a nanny for Casey Anthony’s 2-year-old daughter Caylee. The two began dating, Casey Anthony had claimed.

After Caylee went missing June 16, 2008, Casey Anthony stayed away from her parents’ house for weeks, telling her mother she and her daughter were spending time with Hopkins in Jacksonville, Florida, where he lived.

Casey Anthony: Death Penalty Remains on the Table

June 2, 2010

Well, as expected, it appears that Casey Anthony’s attorneys were not able to persuade Judge Belvin Perryto take the death penalty off the table.

From Central Florida News:

Her attorneys had asked the state of Florida to justify seeking the ultimate punishment if Anthony is found guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

The judge sided with the defense and ordered the state to list the aggravating factors for a death sentence.

The state quickly did just that, listing five of the possible 15:

  1. The victim was younger than 12 years old.
  2. The victim was particularly vulnerable because her killer was her mother.
  3. Murder was committed during aggravated child abuse.
  4. Murder was cold, calculated and premeditated.
  5. Murder was especially atrocious.

Casey Anthony: Is the Prosecution Using Dirty Tricks?

June 2, 2009

According to Geraldo Rivera…yes!

On his May 31 show, which featured attorneys Linda Kinney-Baden and Jose Baez, Geraldo stated that the “prosecutors have become twisted in their relentless pursuit of her life.”

Interesting. What are your thoughts on this?

From MyFox Orlando:

He went on to say he believed this is an “unprecedented move for a case of this sort.” Stating that he thought “Casey is most probably responsible for her daughter’s death,” Geraldo said the State is using every “dirty trick in the book,” including “manipulating witnesses.” He further stated the prosecutors are “leaking damning videotape and every deposition they can get their hands on.” This was his lead into the real issue of this segment with Anthony’s attorneys; the filming of Ms. Anthony’s reactions. Geraldo said Casey was maneuvered into the medical wing of the jail so “they could videotape her reaction to finding remains.”

Geraldo questioned Baez on his opinion as to whether he believed he will be successful in keeping this video from being released. Jose Baez stated he is using the “mode to keep video sealed” via a “suppression motion.” He went on to state that he “was at the jail trying to see Casey and was prevented from seeing her while they conducted this sham job.” Geraldo interjected with, “They denied her her right to counsel.” Geraldo stated he spoke with Baez the morning the remains were found and after Baez visited Casey that day.

Baez told Geraldo he was told he could not see Casey “until she was taken to medical and cleared.” Baez stated that he waited a lengthy period of time before he was allowed to visit his client while she was in medical. He said, “She thought she was being taken for medical treatment.” Geraldo’s comment was, “It seems so cheap with them releasing interviews.”
