Michael Jackson Memorial Today

July 7, 2009

Unless you are a fan of the late Michael Jackson, you might want to avoid downtown Los Angeles today. The public memorial service for Jackson will take place at the  Staples Center today and fans have been lining up since early this morning.

The “King of Pop” died on June 25 at the age of 50 after going into sudden cardiac arrest.

From the New York Times:

Michael Jackson’s body will be taken to the Staples Center this morning for a memorial service that is expected to be watched by millions on live television, the Los Angeles police chief said Tuesday morning.

Chief William J. Bratton said on KNX radio in Los Angeles that the police were prepared for huge throngs of people to make their way to the arena and the surrounding area when Mr. Jackson’s body is transported there. In an interview on CNN on Tuesday morning, Chief Bratton said the gathering expected for the memorial service could rival the crowds at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Early this morning, several vehicles were seen coming and going from the Jackson family compound in Encino, and large numbers of police vehicles had gathered at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, a San Fernando Valley cemetery studded with celebrity graves, where Mr. Jackson’s private burial service is expected.

Late Monday night, local television broadcast live images of Jackson family members and others arriving and departing from the Forest Lawn cemetery. A hearse was seen driving from one building to another, backing nearly into it through a large entrance way where men then removed a coffin covered by a dark cloth.

New York Post Cartoon Links Obama to Chimp

February 18, 2009

The New York Post is standing behind a cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police.

From the Associated Press:

The cartoon in Wednesday’s Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says the other, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon “troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys.”

But Sharpton said the Post should clarify the point it was trying to make with the cartoon, which was playing off Monday’s rampage by a pet chimpanzee in Stamford, Conn., that left a woman severely mauled. Police ended up killing the chimp.

In a statement, Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: “The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

A story about the cartoon on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post Web site drew hundreds of reader responses, many calling the cartoon racist and insensitive.

Sam Stein, a columnist for the site, wrote that “at its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial.”
