‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake in the Works

24 years after the original, plans have been announced for a remake of the 1980s classic “Dirty Dancing.”

From CNN:

“Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby’s forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions,” the entertainment studio Lionsgate said in a statement.

The film’s original choreographer, Kenny Ortega, will direct the remake. Ortega said he looks forward to casting the successors to the original movie’s stars, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.

Call me Old Fashioned, but I think some “Cult Classics” just aren’t meant to be and shouldn’t be Re-made. I can understand the reasoning for wanting to do it and turning a “New Generation” on to a great Story, and, of course, sometimes the Re-make is pretty good… but usually, with all the “Modernizing” and “Hollywooding-up”, something is always Lost. It would be nice if the “Meaning” and the “Messages” of the Original, in all its Simplicity and their Specialness, remain Intact… although I’m not sure that alot of the Kids nowadays would even “get it”. I just hope that this most-Integral part doesn’t take a Back-seat to Modern Times, whereby incorporating a whole lot of REAL “Dirty” Dancing and Sex-filled Scenes. As long as they do it Justice, and I’m pleasantly Surprised and Impressed, well, I’ll be pleasantly Surprised and Impressed.

I think a part 2 would be better than a remake. I would like to see the story line continued but not re-done in modern time.
