Student Slain; Friend Witnesses Attack on Web

A 23-year-old exchange student was attacked in her Toronto apartment while a friend in China watched via a computer webcam. She was found dead there hours later.

From CNN:

Toronto Police on Monday identified the student as Qian (Necole) Liu of Beijing. She was talking early Friday morning to a male friend from home when a man allegedly knocked on her door, asking to use her phone, police said in a news release.

The online witness said he saw Liu and the unknown man struggle for a time before the attacker turned off her laptop, the news release said.

The friend in China then started a desperate bid to find out what happened, CNN-affiliate CTV reported.

Ten hours later, police arrived at the basement apartment to find Liu’s dead body, naked from the waist down. Her laptop was missing.

Really. Can you imagine. Not only a Shocking and Panic-ridden experience for her helpless Friend to witness, but this poor girl comes to our Country in search of Opportunity and a better Life, and this is how we show our Hospitality and Goodwill. I might be jumping to Conclusions, but something tells me that the Perpitrator wasn’t one of her own kind. Hope they catch the Low-life Scumbag. I feel sorry for her and her Family back in China receiving this news.

Never being too much in favor of private camera exposure, although it has it’s place for sure, and in this tragic incident I am whole heartedly in favor of everyone having one, especially young people living alone, old people living alone, I would think it less likely an intruder would attack if knowingly there is a hidden camera on the premises. I think I will get me one of them things. I am sorry to read about another victim loosing life. So many, somewhere, everyday.

You make a good Point *OneOp*, about having a Camera in the Home/on the Premises, etc. I’ve always been “on the Fence” though, about “advertising” the presence of a “Security Device”…. For example, I personally believe that people who have Signs on their property that their Home is “Protected” by some “System”, are giving potential Intruders the up-front benefit of being informed that there is one there, and, with that information, an Intruder is afforded the opportunity to simply Dissarm it beforehand. I think it’s wiser not to advertise such Protection Systems, and then when the Intruder attempts the actual Break-in, they are “un-Suspecting” when the Alarm goes off, and more-likely to Panic and turn and run. It’s like when I see Signs posted on someone’s Fence that there’s a “Dog on Premises”— That hopeful “Warning” just allows any potential Intruder the benefit of knowing to make sure they bring along a Baseball Bat or a big piece of Meat to take care of that Dog when they hop the Fence. While I do believe such “Advertising” can be of considerable value as a good “Deterrant” in most cases, with all the Technical Information easily available and accessed on the Internet and on TV Shows which can provide ANYbody with the Knowledge and “How-To’s” for doing practically EVERYthing, I just think it makes more Sense not to hand-over a “Fore-warning”. Let them be Surprised instead with what they didn’t expect. Anyway, here I am rambling on about that, when I wanted to say that any type of Security Measure which makes us not only feel more Safe but would be of Benefit in the event that something happened, IS definitely a good thing for added Peace of Mind. I myself just wouldn’t tell or “Advertise” it to anyone other than my Family and/or close trustworthy Friends. Again, that’s just my personal preference, but Yes— In this Day and Age, no one is really Safe, not even in their own Home, and it seems that having a Security System and/or a “Hidden Camera” is as neccessary a part of our Home and Property anymore, as everything else we equip it with.

Honeydog, You cover all aspects of a subject so thoroughly and you are right on this. If I had one, not likely to put up a sign. I do see signs out in peoples yards and of course it is advertising the system so possible if a homeowner agrees to that because they get a break in prices. I don’t know, Seems nothing is 100%
    and certainly not our safety.
