San Francisco Giants: World Champions

Five words I didn’t think I’d ever hear!

Now…I live in the Bay Area, but I’m not a diehard Giants fan. My loyalty here has always been to the Oakland A’s. I grew up idolizing the Bash Brothers and that great pitching staff they had. But…that never stopped me from going to games at Candlestick Park and now AT&T park.

What a thrill it was to watch this band of outcasts and misfits who were castaway from other ball clubs celebrating in the clubhouse, and on the field, last night. To see longtime players like Aubrey Huff, Freddy Sanchez and Cody Ross jumping up and down like little kids…just a very cool sight to see.

Let’s not forget the pitching staff, though! Solid pitching all around. Tim Lincecum beat Cliff Lee not once…but twice! Matt Cain thru 21+ shutout innings and the bullpen was dominant. Brian Wilson shut the door 1-2-3 last night (as he has done quite often) and the entire staff held the vaunted Texas Rangers offense of Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, Michael Young and others, under the Mendoza Line (less than .200 for the series). Amazing!

And what about Edgar Renteria! Two World Series clinching, game winning hits! With his 3-run home run last night, Renteria became only the fourth player to have winning hits in two different World Series. The others: Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig and Joe Dimaggio. Not bad company for a player that most thought was washed up!

The Giants management team, who has taken a beating from media and fans for years…now look like geniuses. Passing on high profile hitters, to bring in what can only be described as “mid-level” talent, people thought they were crazy! Well…who’s crazy now 🙂

The San Francisco Giants are champions of the baseball word…and nothing can take this achievement away from them. The party continues in the City by the Bay and it will probably go on well into next week. With a ticker tape parade planned for Wednesday, I have a feeling that a lot of people will be calling in sick from work!

Congratulations Giants! It’s your moment…take the time to enjoy and bask in the glory of what you have achieved!
