From CNN:

Former child star Gary Coleman, who rose to fame as the wisecracking youngster Arnold Jackson on the TV sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes” but grew up to grapple with a troubled adulthood, has died. He was 42.

Coleman died of a brain hemorrhage at a Provo, Utah, hospital, Friday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman. The actor fell ill at his Santaquin, Utah, home Wednesday evening and was rushed by ambulance to a hospital, Coleman’s spokesman had said in a statement earlier Friday.

He was then taken to another hospital — Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo — later Wednesday night.

In the late ’70s and early ’80s, Coleman was one of television‘s brightest stars, the personality around which NBC’s “Strokes” — the story of two inner-city children who are taken in by a wealthy businessman, his daughter and their housekeeper — was built.

From the Los Angeles Times:

The diminutive Coleman, whose adult height was 4 feet 8 inches, died at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage earlier this week, according to a statement from hospital spokeswoman Janet Frank.

A resident of Santaquin, Utah, he had been hospitalized Wednesday and lost consciousness the next day. He was taken off life support Friday afternoon with his family at his side, the hospital said.

Born with failed kidneys, Coleman had undergone two transplants by age 14 and his growth was permanently stunted by the side effects of dialysis medications.

I find it amazing that Gary did so well— having an Acting Career and so forth— with “Failed Kidneys” to begin with, and then two Transplants at such a young age. I know he was in the News a couple of times a while back, over some bizarre personal issues in his Marriage, and it just always seemed he didn’t have that great of a Life, despite his big Smile and hearty Laugh. A shame. Too young to die. RIP.

The TV screen is a “window” to us out here in which we get to see others lives and foibles and even deaths.
Often this vantage point allows us into the very private sufferings of celebrities and we feel connected
and part of their life experience .A lot of us grew up with Gary and his wise cracking role and impossibly cute little cheeks. It’s a fond memory of better times that he leaves us.We smile when we think of him as a little kid and we get more somber when we think of his struggles as an adult. In any case we tuck him into the corner of our hearts and memories and feel the better for having him with us.
    Rest well Gary…………..
