Workers Hurt in Dutch Stadium Roof Collapse

July 7, 2011

At least one person has died and 14 are injured after part of the roof collapsed at the De Grolsch Veste soccer stadium in the Netherlands.

From CNN:

Sniffer dogs are being used to search for any others who may be trapped in the wreckage, Moniek Eberhard in the mayor’s office for the town of Enschede told CNN.

Those injured are thought to be construction workers. It is not known how many people were working in the area when the collapse occurred, at midday local time.

Two people were seriously injured and have been taken to hospital, while three were treated at the scene, Eberhard said.

The club has grown over recent seasons, and was working to expand the seating at its stadium.

Russia and Qatar Selected to Host World Cup

December 2, 2010

Congratulations to Russia and Qatar who have been selected to host the FIFA World Cup  in 2018 and 2022. This will be the first time hosting the event for each country.

From CNN:

Russia headed off 1966 host England and joint presentations from Spain-Portugal and Holland-Belgium in Thursday’s vote at FIFA headquarters in Switzerland.

Qatar won the right to host the 2022 tournament ahead of bids from the United States, South Korea, Japan and Australia.

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin decided against attending the ceremony in Zurich, but his deputy Igor Shuvalov was present to accept the first successful bid from Eastern Europe.

“You have entrusted us with the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I can promise that you will never regret it. Let us make history together,” he told the assembled delegates.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, the son of Qatar’s emir and head of the emirate’s bid team, said he was looking forward to the first time a Middle Eastern nation hosts the event.

“Thank you for believing in change, for expanding the game and for giving Qatar a chance. You will be proud of us – and you will be proud of the Middle East. I promise you this,” he said.

Paris Hilton Facing Felony After Arrest

August 30, 2010

Prosecutors have filed a felony charge against Paris Hilton stemming from her arrest over the weekend on suspicion of possession of cocaine.

Last month, Hilton was detained in South Africa for allegedly smoking marijuana at the World Cup.

Bad Paris…bad!

From CNN:

Hilton was charged with possession of a controlled substance. She is set to be arraigned October 27 in Clark County District Court, according to courthouse spokeswoman Jillian Prieto.

The hotel heiress, 29, was arrested late Friday. Police pulled alongside a Cadillac Escalade in which Hilton was a passenger about 11:30 p.m. and smelled “a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” according to the arrest report.

When the officer looked over, “the female passenger started to put the window of the vehicle up,” the report said. Police told the driver of the Cadillac to pull over, which he did, in front of the Wynn Hotel.

74 Dead in Uganda Bombings

July 12, 2010

The leader of an Islamist militant movement in Somalia said in a Web site posting that Uganda would be targeted for retribution over the massacres perpetrated against Somalis, which many believe to be a claim of responsibility for the bombings that killed at least 74 people Sunday.

From CNN:

“My message to the Ugandan and Burundian nations is that you will be the target for our retribution to the massacres perpetrated against the Somali men, women and children in Mogadishu by your forces,” said an Arabic statement from Sheikh Abu Al Zubeir, identified as “the Emir of Al-Shabaab in Somalia.” The statement was posted on an al-Qaeda affiliated website which previously has carried statements and videos from Al-Shabaab.

The website set up a page Monday to “receive congratulations” on Al-Shabaab’s behalf for the “blessed operations” in Uganda.

The three explosions ripped through two venues where crowds were watching the World Cup final match on Sunday.

Switzerland Shocks Spain in World Cup

June 16, 2010

Switzerland pulled off a shocking upset today at the World Cup by beating European champion, and World Cup favorite Spain 1-0 on a second-half goal by Gelson Fernandes.

This is hands down the biggest upset of the World Cup so far! I wouldn’t want to be the team that Spain faces next, that’s for sure!

From ESPN:

Spain outshot the Swiss 24-8 and held the ball 63 percent of the time, but could find no way through Switzerland’s determined defense.

It was Switzerland’s first win over Spain.

Eren Derdiyok created Switzerland’s goal by surging through the center of Spain’s defense and rounding Iker Casillas on one of Switzerland’s rare attacks. Gerard Pique‘s desperate tackle stopped Derdiyok, but Fernandes was on hand to pounce on the loose ball and score.

At the final whistle, Fernandes fell to his knees and raised both arms to the sky. The entire team then went to the small section of Swiss fans in the Moses Mabhida Stadium and saluted them as they cheered and rang alpine cow bells.

Condom Sales Up After South Korea Win

June 13, 2010

I guess you can safely say that the South Korean team “rose to the occasion” in their pool play victory against Greece.

From The Straits Times:

Stores in residential areas also did well as those tuning in at home bought three times the beer and more than twice the number of snacks.

After the game, fans in celebratory mood bought five times more condoms than during the team’s lacklustre 2006 World Cup performance, the paper said.

When a Tie is as Good as a Win…

June 12, 2010

That would be today!

Team USA and England fought to a 1-1 draw this afternoon which, even though not a win, is still a great accomplishment for our boys!

The game probably would have ended 1-0 England if not for an embarassing mistake by England goalkeeper Rob Green, who let a shot by Clint Dempsey of Team USA get past him, after he appeared to have it under control, for the game tying goal. (Sorry, the highlight is in Spanish…)

Overall, I’m satisfied with the result. We got in, got a point, and got out. Now, let’s just get a “W” in the next one to get us up to 4 points!

Did you watch? What did you think? Are you satisfied with a tie?

David Beckham Tears Achilles Tendon

March 14, 2010

Terrible news for soccer fans, especially English soccer fans, as it appears that David Beckham has torn his achilles tendon in a game versus Chievo Verona this afternoon.

From the Associated Press:

David Beckham hobbled off with an apparent torn left Achilles’ tendon in the closing minutes of AC Milan’s 1-0 win over Chievo Verona on Sunday, putting his status for the World Cup at risk.

Beckham appeared to injure himself without coming into contact with anyone else. With the ball at his feet, the former England captain shifted his weight and immediately realized there was a problem, reaching his hand down to his left heel.

Visibly in pain and in tears, Beckham went to the sideline for medical attention, leaving Milan with 10 men since all three substitutes had already been used.

“He felt the muscle begin to come up, which is a typical symptom when you break an Achilles’ tendon,” Milan coach Leonardo told Italy’s Sky TV. “This is a real blow.”

From CNN:

Veteran England midfielder Beckham hobbled off the pitch in tears, reaching down to nurse his left heel, with TV network Sky Sports Italia reporting that he has suffered a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon.

If that proves to be the prognosis, it would leave Beckham’s hopes of appearing for England at this summer’s World Cup finals in tatters.

Beckham’s injury soured Milan’s eventual win, achieved with just 10 men as all three substitutes had already been deployed before the former Manchester United midfielder was forced to limp off.

Manchester United A Target of Hotel Bombers

July 30, 2009

Reports today state that the Manchester United football team was a main target of Al Qaeda hotel bombers two weeks ago.

From the Daily Mail:

Today, an internet message emerged purporting to be by South East Asia’s most wanted terror suspect and claiming responsibility for the carnage.

The author, claiming to be Noordin Mohammed Top, ‘leader of Tandsim Al Qaeda Indonesia’, attacked the Ritz as warning to Indonesians ‘against the arrival of the soccer club Manchester United’ at the hotel.

‘These players are Christians, so Muslims should not honour and respect these enemies of Allah,’ he wrote.

He also said Manchester United manager Alex Fergusson and his squad were targeted because they were ‘Crusaders’.

It is unknown whether the group knew the players were arriving a day after the blasts.

From the Telegraph:

The messages justified the attack on July 17, in which seven people died, as an attack on American interests and labelled Manchester United, which was due to book into one of the hotels, as “crusaders”.

It said the attack was a warning to Indonesians “against the arrival of the soccer club Manchester United” at the Ritz-Carlton.

“These players are Christians, so Muslims should not honour and respect these enemies of Allah,” it said.

The posting, which has not been independently verified, was purportedly written by Mohammed Noordin Top, South-East Asia’s most wanted man.

It referred to the “American chamber of commerce” as a target, apparently confirming that a breakfast meeting of Western businessmen at the Marriott, hosted by US lobbyist James Castle, was the focus of the attack.
