Gunman Opens Fire at LAX

November 1, 2013

A suspect has been shot and is in police custody after a shooting that prompted evacuations this morning at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The shooting took place at approximately 9:30 a.m. (PT).

The incident began when a man with an unconfirmed type of firearm approached a checkpoint at Terminal 3 and opened fire on a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent.

Unsubstantiated rumors are circulating that the shooter has been identified as Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, of Los Angeles.

From the Los Angeles Times:

Law enforcement officers were flooding the airport, authorities said, and terminals 2 and 3 were evacuated.

Tory Belleci of the television show Mythbusters tweeted: “Heard gun shots then everyone starting running for the door. Not sure if anyone was hurt. #LAX.”

TV footage showed dozens of offficers swarming the airport. Images also showed a law enforcement officer being treated by paramedics. He appeared to be alert. Another officer had a bloody hand.

From NBC News:

NBC News reports that one TSA employee was killed and a second employee was wounded in the gunfire. The report could not be immediately confirmed by police or airport officials.

Rivals Condemn Beating of San Francisco Giants Fan

April 4, 2011

The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers may be long time rivals on the ball field, but officials from the opposing baseball teams joined forces over the weekend to condemn a brutal beating that left a Bay Area fan in critical condition.

I really hope they catch these guys soon. It’s bad for baseball, bad for the teams involved and most of all, gives us true baseball fans a black eye. No one deserves to be attacked for supporting their favorite team! No one!

From CNN:

Bryan Stow, 41, has been fighting for his life since two men wearing Dodgers clothing assaulted him after last week’s season opener in Los Angeles, police said. The avid Giants fan was attacked after the game, which the Dodgers won 2-1.

“This attack is unconscionable behavior that will not be tolerated in either of our ballparks or in either of our cities,” the team officials said in a Sunday statement, which was also signed by the mayors and police chiefs of San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Police were still searching for the suspects, who they said were between the ages of 18 and 25.

“Obviously they were young, foolish and cowardly. And there’s no room for that type of activity in the city of Los Angeles or anywhere in the world,” Los Angeles Police Detective P.J. Morris told reporters Friday.

Lindsay Lohan Facing Felony Over Necklace Theft

February 9, 2011

Prosecutors will formally charge Lindsay Lohan today with felony grand theft related to a necklace that was allegedly taken from a California jewelry store last month.

Will she FINALLY see some jail time for SOMETHING? Hard to say. We’ll have to wait and see…

From CNN:

The charge comes five weeks after the actress was released from court-ordered drug rehabilitation and less than three weeks before a judge said he might free her from supervised probation from a 2007 drunken driving conviction.

The actress “allegedly walked out of the store with the necklace on January 22,” a statement from the district attorney’s office said. “The owner reported the theft to the Los Angeles Police Department, which investigated the allegation and presented evidence to the D.A.’s office last week.”

The “one-of-a-kind necklace,” which is valued at $2,500, was handed over to police just before they were to execute a search warrant to look for the jewelry in Lohan’s Venice, California, apartment last week, police said.

Los Angeles Cop Faked School Shooting Story

January 28, 2011

A police officer in Los Angeles who claimed he was shot while patrolling near a high school has now been arrested for making up the story.

From CNN:

Officer Jeff Stenroos of the Los Angeles Unified School District Police Department had said he was shot in the chest on January 19 in the west San Fernando Valley. He said the shooting happened when he got out of his squad car to check on a man peering into parked vehicles near the El Camino High School.

The alleged shooting prompted an hours-long lockdown of several schools as police scoured the area looking for the shooter.

In the following days, authorities released a sketch of the alleged gunman, and the reward for information grew to $100,000.

But Thursday night, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said Stenroos had been arrested on a felony count of filing a false police report.

“The current state of the investigation refutes Stenroos’ initial account of the incident and we are now certain that there is no outstanding suspect in this shooting,” he said in a statement.

Men Hit and Killed By Train in Los Angeles

December 14, 2010

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is investigating the deaths of three people who were killed by a train last night.

From CNN:

The train conductor saw three men, who looked in their early 20s, on the track on an overpass, Deputy Jeff Gordon told CNN. He tried to stop, but made contact with what he thought were two of the men, though a third body was also found.

“They were pretty mangled,” said Gordon.

The area where the incident happened is known for graffiti “taggers” getting onto ramps, and it is possible that’s what these men where doing at the time, Gordon said.

Missile Fires Off California Coast

November 9, 2010

An apparent missile shot across the sky off the coast of Southern California last night and was caught on video by a local TV station’s camera.

You can see video at the link below.

From MSNBC:

KCBS reported the trail was visible from Los Angeles. The station’s helicopter crew described the missile’s location as 35 miles out to sea north of Catalina Island.

Senior Pentagon and Navy officials told NBC News that they did not know who launched the missile.

A senior official told NBC News it was “possible” that the incident was an accidental launch by the military. However, the Navy, Air Force and Missile Defense Agency said they had no information to indicate they were involved, NBC News reported.

5.7 Earthquake Rattles San Diego

June 14, 2010

Looks like the earthquake which shook Southern California this evening measured 5.7 on the Richter Scale with an epicenter about 60 miles from Tijuana, Mexico.

Looks like there has been a cluster of recent earthquakes right on the California/Mexico border!

At Petco Park in San Diego, Toronto Blue Jays reliever Scott Downs had just retired David Eckstein and found himself standing on the mound when the stadium began shaking.

If you’re in Southern California…please share the experience. I’ve been in 4 large earthquakes, and everyone seemed to be a little different…

From the Associated Press:

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-5.7 quake was centered five miles southeast of Ocotillo near the U.S.-Mexico border. It struck Monday at about 9:30 PDT.

The quake was initially reported as a magnitude-5.9 temblor.

It was felt as a gentle rolling motion in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Orange County.
