12 Year Old Girl Beaten While Neighbor Films

March 28, 2012

A man who filmed a group of girls attacking a 12-year-old has told Providence, Rhode Island, police that he thought it was just a prank.

The man is not being charged and, according to police, is not involved in the case sinche te video is no longer in his possession. As I’m sure you can imagine, the girl’s mom has stated that she is horrified that the man didn’t try to stop her daughter’s attack.

From CNN:

Two of the girls have been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy, and two others have been charged with simple assault and conspiracy, said Providence Police Sgt. Matthew Ryan.

The 12-year-old suffered two black eyes, a bruised nose and bite marks on her hands. Holly Gingerella, the girl’s mother, said, “My daughter is doing OK. She doesn’t look very good, but she’s a strong child.” She said her daughter has a shunt in her brain to aid with a medical problem, but the shunt was not damaged in the assault.

The man posted the video of the incident on YouTube, where he shows his face to the camera and describes the attack, “Kids are (expletive) sitting outside for like 20 minutes saying, ‘Don’t do this, don’t do that. You gotta keep going, you gotta keep fighting.’ They’re like planning it so they can just record it.” While he speaks, girls can be heard shouting in the background.

Magic Johnson’s Group Buys Los Angeles Dodgers

March 28, 2012

According to numerous reports, a group that includes former Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Magic Johnson will purchase the Los Angeles Dodgers for $2 billion.

I think this is a great move and will hopefully resurrect one of sports greatest rivalries with the San Francisco Giants.

From CNN:

The price tag is the most ever paid for a North American sports franchise, according to MLB.com. The group will officially acquire the team, one of baseball’s most storied franchises, after the deal is approved by the judge overseeing the Dodgers’ bankruptcy.

The team has won the World Series championship six times and, for decades, boasted an intensely loyal fan base.

But in recent years, under the ownership of real estate developer Frank McCourt, the Dodgers made headlines more for its financial woes than home runs.

The team’s troubles began when McCourt and his wife, Jamie, decided to part ways. An acrimonious and expensive divorce battle followed.

$4 Gas a Reality for Many Americans

March 28, 2012

$4/gallon for gas? If only I could get it that cheap!!! I paid $4.59 just this morning in the Silicon Valley…

Sadly, the price of an average gallon of regular gas surpassed the $3.90 mark yesterday, which has the price of gas within 10 cents of the $4 threshold. Crazy!

From CNN Money:

The current price compares to just below $3.70 a month ago, and just below $3.59 a year ago.

Gasoline averages more than $4 a gallon in 10 states and the District of Columbia. At $4.55 a gallon, Hawaii has the nation’s highest pump price.

Prices are less than a nickel away from $4 a gallon in Nevada and Wisconsin.

Wyoming has the nation’s lowest gas prices, averaging nearly $3.51 a gallon.

Broncos and Jets: Ticking PR Time Bombs?

March 26, 2012

This blog post originally appeared on The Gutes.

You may have heard the news: Peyton Manning, who missed the 2011 season with a neck injury that many thought could threaten his career, has signed a contract with the Denver Broncos to be the team’s next starting quarterback. This is great news for Broncos fans everywhere because they haven’t had a popular starting quarterback since the John Elway days, right? Wrong…

After taking over a struggling 1-4 team, quarterback Tim Tebow led the Broncos to victory after victory last season, struggling for the first three quarters before “Tebow Time” took over late in the game. With an offense that quickly transformed into an option attack, and a defense that kept every game close, the Broncos eventually won the AFC West title. Tebow was also a major reason the team won their first playoff game in electrifying fashion against the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime.

The signing of Manning has caused some dissatisfaction in Denver and throughout Bronco Nation. The so-called “Tebowmaniacs” are demoralized at the loss of their savior and Tebow himself can’t be too happy with his sudden departure from the team that he resurrected last season, although you would never know by speaking with him. Even after signing one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, Elway (now an executive with the team) has left a fan base divided, and this isn’t likely to change any time soon.

While Manning has the potential to lead the team back to the playoffs this season, one has to wonder how much of an injury risk he remains. Should something happen to the new face of the franchise, could we be looking at a potential PR nightmare in Denver?

Tick…tick…tick…

And what about Tebow’s new team. On paper, the New York Jets acquisition of the quarterback would appear to be a slam dunk for their fans. Already one of the most popular athletes in the world, Tebow brings his marketability and football skills to the center of the media universe. This situation has the potential to put him in LeBron James territory when it comes to his marketing value. But what does his acquisition do to the chemistry of the team? If he becomes the starting quarterback, will Tebow have the leeway to struggle as he originally did in Denver, while playing in the #1 television market in the country?

Tick…tick…tick…

Right now, the Jets now have the equivalent of two starting quarterbacks in Tebow and Mark Sanchez. The team just signed Sanchez to a three-year contract extension last week, a move that was met with a mixed reaction from Jets fans that have waited since 1969 for a return trip to the Super Bowl. Sanchez is 27-20 as a starter in the regular season and has a 4-2 record in the playoffs. Like Tebow, he’s led multiple game-winning drives and who can forget that he’s defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots three times over the past three seasons (something no other quarterback in the league has done). Will diehard Jets (and Sanchez) fans revolt if the coaching staff hands the ball over to Tebow as the starting quarterback in 2012?

Tick…tick…tick…

Whether its comments by Coach Rex Ryan, or issues involving players and/or fans, the Jets always seem to be in need of a PR makeover. Now, Tebowmania is about to sweep New York and one has to wonder what that means for the city. The team has always needed a “good guy” who can lead the team back to its glory days. Will the arrival of Tebow be the new incarnation of “Linsanity” that Jeremy Lin brought to the New York Knicks? Or are we looking at a quarterback controversy that will bring on a PR nightmare in New York?

Tick…tick…tick…

From a public relations standpoint, both the Broncos and Jets will be interesting to watch this season. You have to wonder what happens to the Broncos if Manning gets hurt. How quickly will the backlash come from the fans? How soon will you hear the “I told you so’s” from local sports writers? How will the Broncos be able to save face?

Tick…tick…tick…

And what about the quarterback situation in New York? Will Tebow be the starting quarterback? What about Sanchez? If Sanchez starts the season as the team’s quarterback, and struggles, will the coaching staff be forced to make an immediate change? What if he plays well? Will fans still demand increased playing time for Tebow?

Tick…tick…tick…

Both camps are walking on thin ice right now with fans due to their recent moves. As with any trade, the sky’s the limit for the potential. Who knows? The signing of Manning and trade of Tebow could end up being great for both franchises. But, if something goes wrong, you could easily be looking at a major PR nightmare in both cities.

Tick…tick…tick…BOOM!

Casey Anthony: Civil Trial Delayed Until 2013

March 22, 2012

The civil trial against Casey Anthony has been delayed until January of next year. Circuit Judge Lisa T. Munyon re-set the trial after Zenaida Gonzalez’s lawyer notified the court of a conflict with a previously scheduled case in Duval County.

Cat Falls 19 Stories…and Lives!

March 22, 2012

According to animal rescue officials in Boston, Sugar, a white furry cat, plunged 19 floors from a window in a high-rise building…and lived!

From MSNBC:

A woman in the West End building said she saw a “white streak” go by her window early Wednesday afternoon and then saw Sugar after she hit the ground, said Mike Brammer, assistant manager of the animal rescue services department at the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

“You could see the impact crater where she actually did hit the ground and she actually lost some fur in the hole, too,” Brammer said.

The cat’s small landing spot is surrounded by brick and concrete.

“Whether cats can sometimes aim, so if it did it itself or if it was a combination of luck or both … it managed to hit that small patch of mulch, so it was very soft ground,” he said.

France Shooting Suspect Killed in Raid

March 22, 2012

A 23-year-old gunman who said al Qaeda inspired him to kill seven people in France died this morning as he scrambled out of a ground-floor window during a gun fight with police.

After the shooter’s death, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said everything had been done to bring him to justice alive.

From CNN:

The French police siege to capture a suspected al Qaeda-trained militant came to a bloody end Thursday morning when commandos shot Mohammed Merah in the head as he fired wildly back at them, authorities said.

Merah emerged from a bathroom in his apartment and fired more than 30 shots at police as they burst in to end a standoff that had lasted more than 31 hours, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said.

He jumped out a window, still shooting, and was found dead on the ground, Interior Minister Claude Gueant said.

Two police officers were injured in the raid, Gueant said.

Merah had only two bullets left in his gun when he was killed, Molins said.

Solar Storms Hit Earth

March 8, 2012

Take cover!!!!!!!

Just kidding. It’s not like that!

The largest solar storm in five years has hit the Earth, but scientists say that we’ve lucked out (so far).

The storm arrived Thursday morning and scientists say that the “peacefulness” of it could change as the storm spends the day shaking the planet’s magnetic field.

From ZDNet:

NASA reports that the  two new solar flares were ejected from the sun on Wednesday March 6 and reached Earth at 5:45 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 8. The two flares were traveling at 1,300 and 1,100 miles per second.

Even though there was a larger solar flare last  year, magnetic, radio and radiation emissions could create a larger impact on Earth. Early reports say the impact was weaker than anticipated but the intensity of the storm could pick up.
