Happy Holidays Everyone

December 22, 2011

It’s finally that time of year when we take a step back and reflect on all that has transpired over the past 365 or so days.

For me, it has been a roller-coaster year of both highs and lows, culminating with Christmas this weekend and New Years the following. I for one am looking forward to the holidays and I know my kids are as well. They are going to be spoiled for sure this year!

You may have been aware of my notable absence this year. I know that I mentioned that things were going on in my personal life which kept me away from blogging for days and weeks at a time. Personally, I’ve gone through a lot this year. Most of which I have not expressed outwardly until today. I’m not going to go into too much detail, but I think it’s time for some closure.

Until this summer, my wife and I were expecting our 3rd child between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We had been trying for more than two years and we were very excited. Unfortunately, on a trip to the doctor entering the 2nd trimester, the baby’s heartbeat became faint and we were told that the baby was not going to survive. Sadly, ten days later, my wife lost the baby. I was on a business trip at the time, and learned of this news when I returned home. Needless to say, we were devastated.

This, combined with the loss of a number of close relatives and other circumstances, sent me into what can only be described as a deep depression. Only recently have I found myself starting to move on to happier times. As part of our annual tradition of purchasing holiday ornaments, we bought one for our little “walnut” so that he’ll always be with us at the holidays.

I’ve tried to maintain “The Korner” as often as I can, but just haven’t had the desire that I used to. This will hopefully change as we move into 2012. There’s so much great news to share (as well as the crazy and quirky stories) and as you know, I love to post and love reading all of your comments.

For now, I’m preparing for some time with the family over the holidays to “live again” and make sure that I’m spoiling everyone as much as I should! They deserve it and I love to do it!

Treasure all the time you have with those you love. You don’t know how much time you have so make the best of every minute!

Happy Holidays everyone!

December 20, 2011

In case you were wondering…no…Jon Bon Jovi is not dead.

The New Jersey rocker was the victim of yet another Internet hoax which has previously “claimed the lives” of Jackie Chan and Bill Cosby.

For now…Bon Jovi is still “Livin’ on a Prayer”.

From ABC News:

The 49-year-old singer has tweeted a humorous photograph of himself wearing a signature tight black t-shirt and standing in front of a Christmas tree.

In the picture, he holds up a sign reading: “Heaven looks a lot like New Jersey – jbj.”

A status update on his Facebook page read: “Rest assured that Jon is alive and well! This photo was just taken.”

Virginia Tech: Lockdown Lifted Following Shooting, Weapon Found

December 8, 2011

A gunman shot and killed a Virginia Tech University police officer earlier today. Police said a second person was later found dead. The second victim is believed to be the gunman.

Today’s shooting comes four years after a shooting spree in which a Virginia Tech student, Cho Seung-Hui, killed 32 people on the campus before killing himself back in April 2007.

From CNN:

Around 4:30 p.m., the school in Blacksburg, Virginia, announced on its Twitter feed that “law enforcement agencies have determined there is no longer an active threat or need to secure in place. Resume normal activities.”

Police said the incident started shortly after noon, when the police officer made a traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall. During that stop, a person who wasn’t involved in the traffic stop approached and shot the officer, authorities said.

After witnesses told police that the shooter fled toward a nearby parking lot, an investigating officer saw a “suspicious person” alive in that lot. When the officer circled back to approach the person – described as a white male – that person was dead of a gunshot wound, police said.

Actor Harry Morgan Dies at 96

December 7, 2011

Harry Morgan, who won an Emmy Award playing Col. Sherman T. Potter on “M*A*S*H” died today at his home in Los Angeles. He was 96.

From the New York Times:

On television, he played Officer Bill Gannon with a phlegmatic but light touch to Jack Webb’s always-by-the-book Sgt. Joe Friday in the updated “Dragnet,” from 1967 to 1970. He starred as Pete Porter, a harried husband, in the situation comedy “Pete and Gladys” (1960-62), reprising a role he had played on “December Bride” (1954-59). He was also a regular on “The Richard Boone Show” (1963-64), “Kentucky Jones” (1964-65), “The D.A.” (1971-72), “Hec Ramsey” (1972-74) and “Blacke’s Magic” (1986).

But to many fans he was first and foremost Col. Sherman T. Potter, commander of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital unit in Korea. With a wry smile, flat voice and sharp humor, Mr. Morgan played Colonel Potter from 1975 to 1983, when “M*A*S*H” went off the air. He replaced McLean Stevenson , who had quit the series, moving into the role on the strength of his performance as a crazed major general in an early episode.
