Casey Anthony: Judge Stan Strickland Takes Himself Off Case
BIG NEWS today in the trial of Casey Anthony as Judge Stan Strickland has announced that he is taking himself off the case. Chief Judge Belvin Perry will be taking over the case.
Incredible! This all happened so quickly. I can say that I’m surprised at the sudden turn of events. Wow! Almost speechless…
Just a couple days ago we first heard about the “relationship” (and I use the term loosely) that Judge Strickland had with Marinade Dave…and now this?
So…what will this mean for the trial? For the prosecution? For the defense?
Where do we go from here? Thoughts?
From the Associated Press:
Circuit Judge Stan Strickland granted a motion Monday filed by Anthony’s attorneys asking that he recuse himself.
Anthony’s defense attorneys had argued that comments the judge made to a blogger recently showed he was prejudiced against Anthony.
In his decision, Strickland denied doing anything wrong. But he says he is removing himself from the case because Anthony’s attorneys likely would allege bias each time he ruled against their motions.
From the Orlando Sentinel:
Orange Circuit Judge Stan Strickland issued an order this afternoon, excusing himself from the case.
This comes after the defense team asked the judge to disqualify himself because he had developed a “personal relationship” with a blogger who has been critical of Anthony.
Orange-Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry will take over the case.
From The TV Guy:
Judge Stan Strickland is stepping down from the Casey Anthony case, TV stations reported tonight. In his last act, Strickland had some withering words.
“He does indicate in so many simple words here that he has seen the defense seeking publicity in this case before,” WESH-Channel 2’s Greg Fox reported.
Fox read Strickland’s last line in a three-page response to a defense motion seeking his removal: “At its core, defense counsel’s motion accuses the undersigned of being a self-aggrandizing media hound. Indeed the irony is rich here.”

I am speechless.

I am outraged but not surprised, what else could the Judge do? The defense would use this at every turn if he had not stepped down, and the honorable man that he is would not allow that.
I will miss him as I have never seen a fairer judge, and I’m sure the defense will regret this move in the end. They are making themselves look like complete a&&es, and let’s not forget it was notorized by the BIG piece of crap Mason who’s notary had already expired!!
I hope the new judge will put an end to these ridiculous and desperate moves by the DUH-fense especially now that the state of Florida is paying for the poor excuse of a human (Casey).

Judge Strickland is a decent Man with upstanding Morals that in my Opinion is why he granted the Defense’s Motion. He knew like he stated himself “he is removing himself from the case because Anthony’s attorneys likely would allege bias each time he ruled against their motions.” He knew what the Defense was after and the Games they were playing!
I think it is a sad Day for the Defense, it shows their true Face and to what lengths they will go to get their Way, even if it is wrong. I guess they must be so proud of what they accomplished
I hope the next Judge will not be as patient with the Defense and not put up with all those Games the Defense is playing.
Judge Strickland will be just fine, he got rid of a Big Headache. He did a fine Job with this Case and was fair to Both Sides in spite what the Defense is trying to make every one believe. I say, what goes around will come around.
Maybe just maybe the Defense shouldn’t celebrate just yet!

The defense from what I understand about Judge Perry are not going to like him. He is much tougher than
Strickland.

I feel terrible for Judge Strickland. However, I think he is a very wise man, and this is another indication of his wisdom. This may be one of the best things that has happened to him this year. I imagine the gentleman is quite sick and tired of this whole charade by now, and needs a break.
Additionally, I think the defense just pounded the last nail in it’s coffin.
If they think getting rid of Strickland is going to win their case, they will likely be very surprised to the contrary.
You know the old saying, “be careful what you wish for, you just might get it”….Baez got his wish. And I’d bet the farm he’s going to regret it.
April 19, 2010 at 2:43 pm
Again b/c the state is picking up the costs,( I live in Orlando) I hope the new judge will put an end to these stupid games and get on with the trial.
They could not has asked for a more fair judge, I’m sure they will regret this.

This is a WIN for Strickland. With his workload, he can now involve himself with other cases and wash his hands of Baez and Co. He retains his integrity while making the defense look utterly foolish.
I wonder Conway’s take on this?
April 19, 2010 at 3:54 pm
I’m sure everyone still thinks highly of Judge Strickland despite the bizarre circumstances. I can only imagine what he thought was complimenting a blogger that originally started out trying set straight what the local media wouldn’t and then turned into one of the bizarre ringleaders of the circus.
Hope it was worth it MarinadeDave. Glad you won the Orbies and got that nice, crisp $100 bill in your shirt pocket. Why don’t you go down to the old folks home and help out now; bet you’d wax the steps.
April 19, 2010 at 4:36 pm
Persception is everything and with Judge Strickland stepping down it will be one less excuse the defense can use. Considering Judge Perrys reputation the defense just gave themselves a bigger headache.
Not about Dave!!!! Dave had little to do with the Judges stepping away from the KC circus. This is all about the defense playing games. Dave is a blogger and is not held to a higher standard than anyone else. Dave can write ALMOST anything he wants. Daves writings do not/did not affect a court proceedings.
To think that is giving Dave’s blog more power than is realistic. JMO

Perception of Bias is all it took.
April 19, 2010 at 6:35 pm
I wonder if the defense KNEW who the new judge would be?
Judge Strickland is a great man, and the defense will soon find out what a horrible mistake they made. Hopefully, this trial will gain momentum, and justice will be served for little Caylee. Good luck to the new judge!
April 19, 2010 at 6:46 pm
This Motion was never about Dave Marinade. This is about a murdered child and the defendant, who happens to be her mother. One needs justice and the other needs a fair trial and appropriate punishment if she is convicted. She will more than likely never get the death penalty if she is convicted but a LIFE behind bars. Her parents can come into the jail and bring her some chili when she gets sick of the bologna sandwiches and the cold slaw.
What happened today was all about Judge Strickland. He is gone from the trial and when he recused himself he said the following:
“The cumulative effect will be to elevate an otherwise MEANINGLESS SITUATION into a genuine appellate issue.”

Aggravated Manslaughter has a minimum of 25-30 years one has to serve before one is eligible for parole. Motion was submitted relative to s921.141 (Penalties)by the defense. It also can carry the DP. FDLE website will be helpful for reviewing the Rule of Law and the Penalties should the jury go for the lesser included charge of Aggravated Manslaughter.
Mike Thomas is like a lot of people associated with this case-stupid.

It is my opinion Baez and his carnies didn’t expect this outcome. I.e., the Judge called their bluff. I believe it will turn out to be best for Judge Strickland and the worst of the worst for Casey Marie Anthony.
April 20, 2010 at 12:53 am
I think you could be right CatCarr. The defense was after the blogger MD because
he could have some evidence in his video’s they did not want allowed and used
judge Strickland as a scapegoat. I know MD thinks he is the scapegoat but I don’t think so. Loosing judge Strickland is the worst thing to happen for the defense. The judge called their bluff, that for sure.
April 20, 2010 at 12:54 am
I agree with CatCarr.

Thanks, OneOp and knight owl!! Always nice to have thoughts validated.

I honestly thought I would be the one who would be Outraged the most, and probably throw both the TV and this Computer accross the room after hearing the News tonight. However, after listening to Jane Velez-Mitchell’s “Expert Legal Panel”, I’m actually amazingly Okay with this. On Judge Strickland, the overall Opinion is the same as most of the above Comments, in that he did not actually do anything
“Wrong”, but rather realized, in simple terms, “what was going on”, and chose to avoid it. Strickland only stayed on this Case because he was “asked” to, since he had already started with it, even after he was supposed to move from “Criminal” to “Civil” Cases, and Judge Perry would have gotten this Case anyway if Strickland had not agreed. I agree with everybody (including the Panel) that Judge Strickland steered this Shabby Ship with good and steady Hands, that he was more than Patient with ALL the Lawyers, and that he is, in no way, Sorry to be saying “Good Riddance” to this Mess. From those “In the Know”, Perry is quoted as a “No Nonsense Judge”, and will not be so “Accommodating” to the Arguments and Bull Shit that’s been so much a part of this Drama. Also confirmed is that he IS definitely “Tougher”, is quite Efficient in his ability to make a smooth and quick Transition, and will proceed with ease to Whip things into Shape. As most have already assumed and stated, it’s True— The Defense has Shot themselves in the Foot. The “Dream Team” “Won” nothing, and can expect some real Waking-up from now on. As for the “scheduled” Trial Date (May 2011), there are differences in Opinions as to whether it will stick.
Some of the Legal Panel had the firm Belief that it was never going to happen next year anyway, while a couple agreed that it will probably be delayed just “a little bit”, as the new Judge is quite strict in Lawyer “Promptness” and “Preparation”, and will want to move things along in a Timely fashion. Nothing to do but Wait-n-See on that one. All in all, I feel (and I hope I’m right) that we’ll at least be finally witnessing this Case with some long-overdue and desperately-needed Control and Dignity, and, I too, commend Judge Strickland for his fine efforts and wish him well, and hope that God, and fair and righteous Justice, will be on Judge Perry’s side.

THUMBS UP! Honeydog, again! lol
April 20, 2010 at 2:48 am
Now you can’t imagine my thoughts about all of this, but I will keep it nice on this blog. Just a nice thought: the prosecution, they can still use any video material they want even if it is MD’s I think? Or don’t they have that right to confiscate it or whatever it is called? Now any video by a third party could have been tampered with of course, so I doubt it could be seen as evidence in any case.
How offensive is it to be called little black boy for a judge? I read this blog about Judge Belvin Perry with this title and I find this title strange.
But I am sure it was meant real friendly, right?
April 20, 2010 at 5:43 am
Honeydog- He stunned everyone and upon reflection and a good nights sleep I say the following:
This case is about “appearances” nothing more and nothing less.Judge Strickland saw the cast of characters involved in this recent Motion to Disqualify him and he summarily recused himself.
Everyone involved in this Motion never had the “appearance of impropriety” they simply showed through their actions and words that they were.
All were impulsive and misguided by their own self importance and without regard for the consequences of their behavior.
Mr Mason will fight like a bulldog for Ms Anthony and he will do whatever it takes no matter how meaningless it is.
April 20, 2010 at 6:09 am
Ina-Judge Perry could take the case or appoint another judge. Let’s wait and see.
This case will move forward and perhaps they will Disqualify the next judge. There will be more of the walking wounded and so it goes.
Ina don’t be a part of that group. Move forward and try not to dredge up the past. My dear Ina you were harmed and you fought back and upon reflection can you not see that you are destroying your bliss as a result of your association and hatred for that person.
Let it go-recapture your writers’ life and your personal happiness. It isn’t enough to feel your pain -I am worn down from giving honest and heartfelt advice (that absolutely no one wants)but I am ever hopeful that you will recognize that hatred is a poison and you sip it each and everytime you relive and voice that anger. Would you do it if you knew it was a source of enjoyment for him?
April 20, 2010 at 7:09 am
Hi Boston thanks, you give nice advice. Makes me think and I think you are right. BTW, I don’t hate him, I was angry for all the lies and I tried often to talk about it with him to move on, but no he wouldn’t. But as I said, I think you are right. So is ThinkerBelle with also good advice today. I do have better things to do than be surprised and angry over and over again by what happened etc. About the bliss; I will look it up, lol. Just hope it won’t ever happen to somebody else. Take care!
April 20, 2010 at 9:42 am
Ina-Just recognizing that you can take that energy and use it for good makes me feel good. You are a writer-think good thoughts and use vivid language to describe them. Lift up your spirit by reaching for the stars and the creative juices will flow.
Bliss begins when you enter your “heart room”-a place where no one can hurt you and where you welcome those you have hurt. Be still and quiet in there. Allow the cool breezes that flow through that room to comfort and sustain you. Reflect on how wonderful it is to be relaxed and how sweet forgiveness is. How effortless it is. Those who you have spent time with need your assistance to leave-they are hurt in body and in spirit. But in order for them to heal you must allow them to find their own way out of your heart room.
They may try to visit you again but lock the door. You owed them nothing but forgiveness. If you open your heart to those who would carve it up again-you might find the door to your heart room slammed shut behind you. Often times people with no bliss want to steal it from others-it’s called breaking and entering. Lock the door.
April 20, 2010 at 10:15 pm
Boston, thank you very much and I did a lot of thinking after reading, you made sense and I know I can forgive, but I also have a sharp tongue and I can’t stand lies.
But you know what, I will give it a try. I shall move on and let them say whatever they want. If others want to believe then so be it
Thanks again! Life is great, and love is the key to any heart. I will lock my door with it so no intruder will get in
April 21, 2010 at 5:14 am
Ina-
Lies and liars make me feel vulnerable and scared-I fear the person who tells me them. I fear the consequences that lies create. Liars are seen in every walk of life-they aren’t going anywhere soon.
But if we want to find our bliss or a certain happiness in life, we have to embrace the truth no matter where we find it. The truth doesn’t often set us free but liars are imprisoned by their own conceit. It’s not a happy place to be. Say a gentle prayer.
April 21, 2010 at 11:39 pm
I said something else, it worked fine as well
Thanks for caring Boston. Liars should be afraid, not those who get lied by!
April 22, 2010 at 4:36 am
You are so right. But let’s face it. They. Don’t. Care. They keep marching forward and the “appearances of impropriety” follows them wherever they go. It’s hard to stop that train once it gets out of the station. When it crashes and burns, make sure you are not on it.
