Casey Anthony: What Keeps You Captivated By This Story?
I still get hundreds of readers a day who stop by the Web site to check out the latest Casey and Caylee Anthony news. I see stories on TV every day, whether it be Nancy Grace or other shows promoting the latest developments. It seems that even a year later, this case captivates a large audience.
For me, I was drawn to the story because my daughter would be the same age as Caylee (to the week) and as a father, I don’t know what I would do if anything ever happened to her. Same with my son.
So what drives you to this story? What makes you read and watch the news every day for updates? Why do you go through the blogs and participate in discussions?
From the Associated Press:
It’s easy to forget 2-year-old Florida toddler Caylee Anthony was slain after all the plot twists and turns in her story.
There are the grandparents, George and Cindy. The phantom baby sitter. The bounty hunter. The meter reader.
At the center of it all is Caylee’s mother, Casey Anthony, the petite 23-year-old charged in her daughter’s death. It’s been one year since the toddler was reported missing, and while her remains were found six months ago, authorities still don’t know exactly how she died.
That’s one of the many unknowns that has kept the public’s interest over the last year. Viewers tune in to the cable television news show hosted by Nancy Grace, who dubbed Casey the “Tot Mom,” to find out about every development. People chat on parenting Web sites about her chances of a fair trial and debate over her innocence or guilt has filled talk radio.
“It certainly has the makings of a made-for-TV movie or a soap opera,” said Bob Longo, news director of WESH, which like other Orlando television news stations has relentlessly covered the case. “I think people have opinions on the characters in the saga. They identify with them or against them.”
The story started as a mystery, centered on finding out what happened to Caylee. But soon, Casey Anthony became the chief suspect and the image of a sympathetic mother morphed into that of a party-loving club-hopper. The stories she told detectives and her parents about where she worked and where she had dropped off Caylee with a baby sitter were lies, police said.
It turned out Caylee had been missing more than a month before Casey Anthony told her family. After her arrest, she told police she had been conducting her own investigation into her daughter’s whereabouts.
George and Cindy Anthony, the grandparents, were used to seeing the little girl almost every day. But beginning about mid-June 2008, Casey and Caylee just weren’t around.

If I may explain, just for myself of course – the first time I heard a report of the 31 days not being reported my heart stopped.
What human being would not be shrieking at the top of their lungs the very second their baby went missing? Most parents have experienced a momentary (hopefully) loss of sight of a child. I know I have.
This is what I believe is so compelling to most people. Add to it all the rest and who could look away?

I think it’s all of the obvious lies that Casey told when first arrested. It was just unreal.

for myself, it is wanting to see the finality. I know that too many people get off scot free after commiting crimes, and I am curious to see the end. I hope that the jury can convict.

I think it is the 31 days, the lies, the mis-truths, half truths and the dynamic of this family that went from searching for the grand-daughter to protecting their daughter. I hope to see it to the end. I hope there is justice for Caylee. I also hope Amy H. gets the closure and justice she needs. I also hope life gets easier for ZFG. There is so many people hurt by this I can’t list them all. I hope one day George and Cindy will get the help they need too!

Stupid people who lie, and the evil they do…..
July 15, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Something about Caylee her eyes her innocence, her sweet smile and joy in her voice when she sang. I was hooked I had to see this through. I prayed everyday she was okay and coming home. Even if I sort of knew this was not to be.

Truth is stranger than fiction. If this were not true, and someone wrote the story as fiction…it would possibly be considered laughably BAD fiction.
So unbelievable that it’s ridiculous.
Really, you can’t even write this stuff, it’s so ‘out there’.
And amazing that one simpering, spoiled girl could hold the state of Florida hostage with her lies.
July 15, 2009 at 6:53 pm
In fact, hold all America hostage with her ridiculous lies.
July 15, 2009 at 11:10 pm
It’s a combination of disgust and morbid curiosity. I’d like to see this girl get either death or life w/o parole. She’s a snivelling worm who whines about getting her life taken away. Yeah, about that… a life for a life?

I can still clearly See and Hear— Breaking-through other News Stories— the very first On-Camera Shot of Cindy Anthony, “Freaking-out”, as she anxiously-explained she had just found-out that her Grand-daughter had been Missing for a Month, her Daughter’s Car smelled like there’d been a Dead Body in it, and that she had to Find Caylee. From that point, it was not your “Ordinary” “Missing-Person” News Flash, and the Curiousity brought-on by Cindy’s Words was beyond the “Normal” Reaction. As the fast and furious Chain of Events became a “Top Story” and spread like Wild-Fire all over the News, I couldn’t, and didn’t want to, miss a Second of it. Like so many others— once Casey entered the Picture, and all the Craziness that continued to Transpire— it’s been like a “Good Bad Book”…. you can’t put it Down. I’ve just not known anything like it… the Anxiety, the Hope, the Waiting, the Shock, the Sadness, the Disbelief, the Anger, the Lies, the Deceipt, the Arrogance, the Exploitation of a Murdered-Child (Dolls, etc), the Hoard of Lawyers for a “Nobody”, the “Cast of Characters”…… *Sophie* above is Dead-On… you can’t Write this stuff. And like a Horror, Tear-Jerker, Drama, Comedy, Adventure, Suspense, and Action-Packed Movie all rolled-into one, I’m not leaving the Theater till it’s over.
July 16, 2009 at 2:11 am
For me, its all of the above. The stories that get me have TENSION. This one has it all. BTW good am all.
July 16, 2009 at 3:32 am
Sophie…I am held captive..in deepest darkest Africa. Anyway with internet access who found this tale of horror would be captivated. It is the lying, of course, but to me it’s also the pictures of the seemingly dedicated mom with her most gorgeous baby..that does it for me. I try and look deep into Casey’s eyes for any sign of evil, and I can ‘t find it. One of the wardens in jail “apparently” said Casey had mentioned the fact that she would love to have another kid, but this time, a boy. Didn`t AL say he only wanted boys? How did this girl get so messed up?

Hi all, For me the attraction is that I believe the legal system is being exposed in this case, with all their warts and pimples. How does a spoiled narcissistic woman party for a month while her daughter is missing…How does a woman accuse a phantom Hispanic-American ” nanny” when she in fact has no money or no job, and then hire a haispanic lawyer to throw out the race card in his favor? I am in a blended family with Hispanic children, and the idea that this could happen in this country at this time makes me ill. How do the people in Florida tolerate millions of dollars being spent on this case? Add to that a foundation being created to solicit money before the child was even found, and continued after it was fairly evident their daughter murdered her, or at least was involved in an accident causing her death? OJ was the first incident that made us all realize that Lady Justice is in fact NOT blind-folded. If Casey Anthony does not get at least a manslaughter conviction from this Im afraid people will truly lose faith in the system altogether. Just my thoughts on this circus of a case…

Hey Kreuzer, what is your fascination with the case? I know you usually don’t jump in and comment to much but I would love your thoughts on this. It is the horror of a 2 year being murdered by her lying mother for me. Hope you have a great day!!!!

the fact that so many are still blogging about…
July 16, 2009 at 10:41 am
Honeydog said it perfectly for me, and here I am, daily glued to the TV and computer for any tidbit of news, but we have such a loooong wait til the trial, the fascination is an addiction for me, one that I’m stuck with I realize.
July 16, 2009 at 3:01 pm
You know, I have plenty to say about all the topics I post. As you know, I don’t write the stories, I just keep people updated with the stories I read.
So here’s my take…I have a daughter who was born on August 16, 2005. She was born only days from Caylee Anthony. I’ve loved her from the day I learned that we were pregnant. We did all the things parents do before their child is born: get a nursery set up, buy clothes, buy toys, all that good stuff.
I just can’t believe that someone could do something like this to their own child. It makes ABSOLUTELY no sense to me. So why do I keep posting the stories? I’ve met some really great people starting back with my first posts last August who have been brought together because of this case. I love reading what everyone has to say about new developments, whether they are good or bad. I’m not going to go out and post stories just to post them. I only post when I find them interesting and think others will too.
There have been those who have stopped by and attempted to derail the conversation. But for the most part, you guys are why I keep posting. I’m waiting for the trial to see what happens. Yes, I believe that Casey Anthony is guilty. Something also tells me that the family has known all along. But they are going through such a tragedy that I have to reserve judgment out of respect.
I’m 31 years old with two kids under the age of four. Like I said, we should never have even had to discuss this because it never should have happened in the first place. Caylee should have a long life ahead of her, which was taken away too early. It’s a very sad case. But everyone has to remember, this is not the only case like this. Kids disappear everyday and its sad to live in a society that this happens. But, then again, there are all kinds of kidnappings and murders in other countries that happen as well. I guess for some people, they are born to be evil. I don’t know if this is what happened to Casey (if she did this of course, it’s only my belief that she did) or if this was just an accident. It doesn’t appear that it was but I’m sure when a trial finally happens, we’ll learn a lot more than we know now.
That’s it

Thank you. I agree it is senseless. I was young when I had my first daughter (19) but I never thought of murder or even harming my child. I eventually had 4 daughters and my life was so full of love and laughter I couldn’t imagine my life without them. I lost my twins to a drunk driver it was and is the worse pain ever so if Cassey did do this and I believe she did, she is no mother she is a monster!!! I appreciate you answering back. I know you just keep us informed but it is always nice for you to give your opinion occasionally. Thanks for all the great post!
July 16, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Yeah. If I had more time, I’m sure I would comment more
With 50 hours+ work each week, and two kids under 4, there just isn’t a lot of time. Maybe I’ll make it a point just to respond just a little more….but no promises! ha ha!

I am fascinated by this case. For me it is the sociopathic mind. There are several of them in this case. It just isn’t very often often we see those minds in young mothers and in grandparents and even legal counsel at the same time. America gets to see these sociopaths work the legal system as the legal system tries to resolve the death of an innocent child. The public cares more about justice than the child’s family. The child’s family claims they are the victims. It is text book sociopathic behavior but from an entire family and their advocates. Don’t see that very often. I tune in to it to watch the real victim, the child they have forgotten, win out over them in the end.

Watching and waiting for the verdict of “Guilt” to be slung at this lying piece of trash!!!!
July 17, 2009 at 5:32 am
Kids and work come first. Oh yea lets not forget your wife then all your followers if you have time, we understand. Sometimes I want your input so I ask and you answer that is good enough you are doing a good job.
July 17, 2009 at 5:39 am
I’d really rather just respond
I love when people say hi though! I usually sit back and watch. It can be a lot of fun!
July 17, 2009 at 5:57 am
I had my first child on my 20th birthday, and my husband left us soon after that. I raised him alone for years. My whole being went into protecting him and raising him. I never loved anything more. To think of someone doing this to their own child is beyond my thought processes. And to have the grandparents of that poor child protect the murderer is unfathomable. I cannot wait for the trial. I really want to see her punished. I hope I will not be disappointed.
July 17, 2009 at 6:26 am
what capitavates about this story is I have a love for all children. I want to stay up to date because I hope this evil woman is put away for a very long time.
July 17, 2009 at 6:29 am
Why is our country in a new epidemic of children being kidnapped and murdered??!!! What is going on?
July 17, 2009 at 8:50 am
I think that what has captivated people’s interest in this case is the fact that all the parties involved defy what is good and honorable in the majority of people. The first time I became aware of Caylee was when I was switching channels and came across Cindy Anthony on the Greta Van Sustren show. I had to stop and listen to this nasty arrogant woman. Of course, upon realizing that her grandchild was missing my heart went out to her. However, throughout the year she has still remained nasty and arrogant! I find her behavior fascinating. Caylee has stolen my heart. In addition to her sweet, charming face, she reminds me so much of one of my own grand daughters. I suspect that many people who are interested also have a little “Caylee” in their lives. There are so many characters and twists and turns in this case and almost everyone is underhanded. With all due respect to other abused and murdered children, this case goes beyond because of all the sociopathy afflicting so many people who have gravitated towards each other, not just Casey. JMO!

The murder of Caylee is much in our hearts thru the blogs that post up to date facts. What is most touching was the pain felt for this child being expressed in so many different comments. After a year, I sometimes wonder if it is still for Caylee or if it is now more our need to be heard. It is similar to the crowds who gathered outside the Anthony home when this all came about. how people gathered on blogs. The passion is still in everyone’s heart for Caylee yet more than not the subjects discussed are now more varied, while waiting for trial. I enjoy reading the comments and the different personalities who contribute their viewpoints but anytime I might think to add a word, someone else has already said in so many different ways.
